Berkeley votes to impeach Bush
By Kristin Bender, STAFF WRITER

BERKELEY - The People's Republic of Berkeley has done it again.

The liberal, left-leaning city has become the first city in the nation to put a referendum on the Nov. 7 ballot to impeach President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney.

Anti-war mom Cindy Sheehan and Daniel Ellsberg, a Vietnam whistle-blower who in 1971 released the Pentagon Papers to the New York Times, both spoke in favor of the resolution at Tuesday's City Council meeting.

<snip>

Dozens of cities, including San Francisco and Oakland, have already approved resolutions calling for impeachment, but Berkeley is the first American city that will ask voters to decide.

<snip>

``We hope this is going to raise a national debate on the issues of the Bush administration shredding the U.S. Constitution, trampling on it,'' Bates said. ``We hope that this will be a debate about what the Bush Administration has done to our civil liberties and rights.''

And how is it news that a northern CA city became the first to Impeach Bush. Too bad Berkleyites dont have such power. Maybe they should concentrate on getting house members elected to the only body who DOES have the power of Impeachment, the US House...

Maybe, Maybe....

Every city ought to be introducing such a ballot measure.

3. You go Berkeley - do it for those of us who live in areas where something
like this wouldn't stand a chance. I admire the people of Berkeley for taking a stand for what's right. :thumbsup:

16. My brother serves as a dept. chair at Berkeley, I go once a year....
there's plenty of diversity, good mix of people. Berkeley proper is a small community and many who work there live in surrounding cities such as Oakland or upper-class hamlets like Lafayette, nevertheless, for all the wealth in the area, I'm surprised that it remains liberal and ahead of the curve! When visiting my brother in his office in January, en route the walls of the department were plastered with messages critical of the Bush administration and Bush jokes, cartoons were in evidence on just about every door. Be kind to Berkeley!

4. Isn't that precious?
Now that that's settled, maybe they can do something that's actually useful. The city's ineptitude has accomplished what the Ayatollah's faith-based initiative failed to do: put Cody's bookstore out of business.
