On Flag Burning: Let's See If I Have This Straight
Edited on Tue Jun-27-06 10:33 AM by ProfessorGAC
A few weeks back, Frist and his henchmen tried to force through a vote on an amendment that would have "protected" marriage.

What this amendment would have been was an abridgment of the rights of a certain class of american citizens. So, this would have been, iirc, the first amendment to RESTRICT rights since the 18th amendment. They wanted to have the Constitution changed so they could pass laws taking away rights and privileges of AMERICAN CITIZENS!

Now, these same folks are pursuing an amendment that would allow Congress to extend an EXPANSION of rights to a piece of cloth! Huh?!?!?!?

They want the Constitution adjusted to subrogate the rights of certain people and expand the rights of fabric? Do i actually have this right?!?!?

No wonder i think these folks are dumber than fence-posts.

1. Yes, you're keeping up nicely.
Today Orin Hatch used the term "Support the Flag". Sort of like support the troops.

23. I Use That One Too!
There's another one some poster here uses that says "dumber than a bag of hammers." I always liked that, but was afraid whoever uses that would think i was stealing, since i couldn't attribute. (I just can't remember which poster uses that all the time.)

And, i thought fenceposts works better in plural, or else it would have to be Boxes of rocks. That seemed awkward. And, it would seem i'm thinking WAY too much about this.

5. You have it right.
'Conservatives' are desperately trying to amend the Constitution to place limitations on the rights of citizens of the United States. The purpose of the Constitution is to place limitations on the government, not the people.

These people are traitors.

7. Too Stupid To Be True, Professor
Has ceased to be any indication a thing will not be done; indeed, it seems to have become an indicator of what will certainly occur....

About the only thing more foolish than people who burn flags are people who take the act seriously when another person does it.

9. I Buy That
I wouldn't burn a flag. It's a futile, although highly provocative, gesture. But, the last thing we should be worried about in the land of the free and home of the brave is the DANGER of someone showing disdain for the country.

What a bunch of sniveling cowards and blowhards.

8. When will the pass an amendment against signing a flag?
Oh, that's desecration and it's already illegal. Chalk up one more crime for bush.

How come he gets to write on flags and Congress doesn't even notice? How come they are wasting time tinkering with the Constitution over a none issue? Is global warming caused by people all over America burning flags? Isn't there something else they could be doing with the little time they spend working?

My big fear is these wedge issue amendment attempts are more than just diversions. I truly fear they are setting the stage to call for a Constitutional Convention and throw the whole document on the table to be sliced up.

11. My Biggest Fear. . .
. . .is that the Dem strategists will not figure out how to defuse this wedge issue by pointint out to the electorate the idiocy of the radical right. I just gave them one way to do it. I fear they will ignore the obvious opportunity to plant this mine.

10. Flag burning Amendment is a typical GOP wedge issue. That's all.

The Republican Party cannot win elections without dividing the electorate with wedge issues. Elections are coming up in Novemeber, so that's why we're hearing noises about things like "protecting" the American flag.

17. I Guess We Can't
Just have to hide them in a closet so nobody sees them tattered and torn and faded, and then calls the Stasi because you have a "desecrated" flag in your possession. Perfect! An UNENFORCEABLE amendment to the Constitution.

19. burning the flag is the only way a flag should be disposed of...
go to any VFW..they collect tattered flags for burning!!

gee is the napkin i use on Forth of July that is the flag..supposed to be kept after everyone wipes their mouths on it ..going to be the rule of law??

or how about the flag toilet paper i saw at the store the other day??
yes i saw flag toilet paper!

i guess its for real patriots on forth of july...so they can shit red white and blue...i stood in the store laughing..and thought ..i should buy a case of this and send it to every repug in congress!!..in fact i said it very loudly and others soon joined me in laughing...if it wasn't so funny it would have brought me to tears!!

i could just see a freeper sitting on the pot ..with a long piece of it..and having it flow out the window of the loo...so all could see how very patriotic they are!!

while shitting on the very constitution the flag represents..

16. i called Arlen Spectors office today and asked this question...
that came to me from Buzzflash this morning..it struck me as so profound...

this is what i said and the article follows>>>
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I thought this was a wonderful question..does the Statue of Liberty have tears running down her face today??

I had to call Spectors office and ask this question..as i want it answered...

I asked the person answering the phone..WHAT does Arlen Spector think of Stalin and what Stalin did?

I said my flag is flying beautiful today with the wind blowing it ..and i said ...i can hardly even look at it anymore..as it makes me think of how things used to be in my country..i said i feel sick when i see that flag blowing in the wind so beautifully..when the laws i live by and i taught my children to live by are meaningless...since Arlen Spector will have more meaningless hearings and meetings..while my flag is shit on by GW*...

I said that the republicans have alot of nerve wanting to put laws into effect to ban burning of the flag..I said whats the difference ..* is shitting on the flag each and every time he signs a signing statement or anything the repubs do..WHILE THEY CONTINUE TO BREAK OUR LAWS AND ARE NOT HELD ACCOUNTABLE BY ANYONE!

I said they are shitting on what each person in my family fought for... under that flag..THE FLAG THEY PUT THEIR LIVES ON THE LINE FOR..

I said i feel almost contempt for that flag now..because of what this administration has done to my country and the laws they continue to break....

...while they salute that flag..

I said, i am going to Philly today and i will be at Independance Square..and i said..i will have tears for the laws our forefathers so brilliantly wrote to protect our republic and democracy..

I said i will cry for what * has done to the very meaning of this republic today..and i said i am sure the Bell will never ring the same..after GW * has destroyed all THE BELL HAS STOOD FOR ... and that i held dear as an American!

please take the time to call Arlen Spector's office and ask him..is the Statue of Liberty crying??

..and what are Spectors real feelings about what Stalin did to his people..tell him to take a very long look at the Statue of Liberty ..and the Liberty bell..and then a very hard look in the mirror..

..and see if there are tears today for the job he abdicates each day , by holding meaningless hearings..while our democracy slips away under his watch!

ask him to go see the LIBERTY BELL..in his own town..and ask him what it really stands for??

and how history will view, what he allowed, under his watch and his guard!

I said i am a sad american with tears in my eyes..eyes that can no longer look at my flag the same...

fly

please if you , like myself are struck by this ..take the time to call Spectors office and ask,.Does the Statue of Liberty Have tears running down her face today??

thank you buzzflash..you set off my tears today..and it made me call Arlen Spectors office and raise hell!!!

Congressional Preview: Bush Gopher to Justify Bush Continually Breaking the Law. Bush Makes John Dillinger Look Like a Law Abiding Citizen.

from buzzflash

June 27, 2006

Yes, Bush is still signing laws that he then promptly announces he will ignore.

It's really quite amazing that he can so brazenly break the law. But did Stalin worry abour repercussions from one-party iron-fisted rule?

Of course not. Neither does Bush.

Now, Arlen "All Bark and No Bite" Specter says he will hold hearings on the infamous Bush "signing statements" (as in "write anything you want in a bill and I will just ignore it if I want, because I AM the law.")

"It means that the administration does not feel bound to enforce many new laws which Congress has passed," said David Golove, a New York University law professor who specializes in executive power issues. "This raises profound rule of law concerns. Do we have a functioning code of federal laws?"

You'd think that Congress might be a little hot under the collar that they are just a meaningless body of government. But, naw, they are just thinking about thinking about thinking what they should do.

First, Spector will hold some meaningless "hearings."

And then nothing will happen, because we have a Politburo one-party rubber stamp government, not a functioning democracy on the national level.

Are those tears we see flowing from the eyes of the Statue of Liberty?

21. the neo cons keep saying 'we fought and died for the flag' wrong

we fought and died for freedom of speech.

the flag is a male thing

down through the ages tribes, units in military, etc. flew flags to identify them. nowadays the same with street gangs showing their colors/flags to identify them.

it's a male thing

we fought and died for freedom of speech which includes doing whatever with flags

(we fought and died for other reasons not just flags)
