A peek into the abyss
Last night I had the dubious honor of having to work at a Republican function. Not just any function, but The 2006 Presidents Dinner. It was, in the words of one of my co-workers, the lowest point in my career. It was also extremely creepy in a surreal kind of way. I felt like I was in the movie They Live, where aliens have taken over the government and some people were joining up with them and getting rich off it. Never in my life have I seen more uptight, snobby, rich, white, holier than thou's in one place. Most of them wore clothes that cost more than my car. They paid between $2500 and $10,000 a plate to have dinner with their fearless leader. There were 7000 of them. I wonder if they had any idea that * would only show up for 15 minutes, make a short speech and leave. The elite being snubbed by the ultra-elite, it was bizarre.
They got their moneys worth though, a nice little freep video was shown slamming Dems like Reed, Pelosi, Fiengold and others. A grating, disjointed speech by Liddy Dole rounded out the evening. Lots of Repuke rah rah and bullshit.
These were the 30%. The ones that will never waiver, their devotion to their master is bought and paid for and their lives are spent in competition for the almighty dollar. They gathered together to celebrate their superiority and flaunt their material wealth. It was the coldest room I have ever been in. Evil in a way I have never felt.
There were a couple moments of laughter amids the insanity. Watching drunken Repukes attempt to dance is always good for a chuckle. The high point of my evening came when I happened by the dessert line snaking through the dining room. A few hundred freeps standing in line to get their share of about 200 tiny pastries. So every few minutes I would wander near the dessert table to wait to see what would happen when the food ran out. When they got down to about 10 little pastries there were at least 100 people still in line. I looked at the guy approaching the table, he had a toupee on his head that looked like 2 squirrels humping. He was pretty drunk and he had about 5 of these "presidential goblets" people were taking home in one of his hands. He stumbled up to the table and picked up a plate. He stood in front of the last few pastries, goblets in one had, his plate in the other, seriously contemplating just how he's going to pick up his pastries with 2 full hands. He decides, with all the class of a freeper, to put his plate down and just start eating his dessert right there at the table. There was a family with a little girl in line behind him and I watched the little girls eyes get big as saucers as this drunken shmoe shoved every last pastry down his throat, smiling at the little girl as he licked his lips and stumbled away. It was a better metaphor for the entire mindset of these people than anyone could ever make up. The drunken, vain asshole smiling as he took a little girls piece of cake. I pictured the little girl years later, Ann Coulter for a new generation, who learned over and over, in many small ways, that it's everyone for themselves.
I know there's been alot of animosity on DU lately. I wish everyone on DU could have been there last night to peer into the face of the real enemy....

a clever freep could figure out who I am and make life difficult for me. It's happened before. Suffice it to say I didn't have much choice in the matter, my job required me to be there.

20. I think we are all in the movie They Live
Seriously, as apt a metaphor as that movie was for the consumption culture of the '80s, it's even more apt nowadays. I dunno...I guess it's always been like that, but it seems like the priveleged class is almost intentionally showing itself to be monstrous these days.

I feel like these kind of people would be happy as hell if there was some way they could have some homeless beggars in there to watch them throw away half their $2500 plate of food...you know, just to reinforce the fact that they are the "have mores". Or maybe just some poor people they could kick in the face for their amusement or something.

Caricatures. The Lesser Characters. Lessons.

Way to not be. I've been close up with the unwashed ignorants who vote that way, but suffer the consequences more than the wealthy beneficiaries. Same thing -- caricatures. As if they couldn't figure out what else to be but some old black-and-white villain. Old Man Potter from 'It's A Wonderful Life'. Lucius Malfoy.

If you poke 'em, you find out that they're all like scared little children.

And they love a little Ex-Lax and LSD in their dessert, I hear. If you ever have the chance.

23. STUNNING POST Walldude...
If only you could have snuck a video camera in there.
We could broadcast the evening over and over on the net.

Maybe then, people would understand the evil
that has gripped this country.

I love your writing- your description of the
"shmoe" drunkenly inhaling the cake
as he smiled at the little girl is priceless.
I could see the scene in my mind's eye PERFECTLY-
And oh, how the anger swelled in me as it
played in my head.

I hope the pig choked on his cake all the way home...

24. I have a job where I have to entertain rich fucks like those...
Edited on Wed Jun-21-06 03:32 PM by Pooka Fey
I'm a musician who works resort hotel corporate events. Or in other words, a music whore. First the disclaimer: Not all rich people are fucking assholes; HOWEVER the seven deadly sins are on display in crowds of rich people in a way that I have never experienced around regular working folks. I feel your pain. And I've never had to work a Republican political event, although I worked a resort where a McCain fundraiser was on the next lawn. During the 8 years that I've been doing this work, I have grown to hate these people with a cold passion that frightens me. I don't like to think of myself as someone with the capacity to hate like that - but there it is. These people do not SEE me. Literally. I'm there entertaining them, yet because I am "the help" - I am invisible. I inhabit a different universe. That's how they can justify sticking me outside on a cold January night in 38 degree weather and refuse to provide me with a heat lamp, while all the female guests are outside in their little strapless numbers toasty warm. I could tell you stories... I play music while visions of guillotines dance in my head.

25. One correction: They're not the 30%. They're the 1%.
The ones to whom all the money is flowing from the ever-shrinking middle class.

The other 29% are the sheep, calmly being led to the fleecing.

27. exactly
the other 29% (and personally I think that may be generous..) are what I call the "lottery voters" - they mistakenly believe that (a) they will some day be rich enough to be one of the elite and (b) that even if they are or become rich enough, that they will be welcomed as one of Them.

They also believe that Bush is a regular Joe and that Darwin said everything is random, so...

26. Hey Walldude, how did the caterer "run out" on a $2500 per plate event?
If that happened at one of the resorts where I work, the banquet captain would be forced to commit ritual suicide in full view of the guests. Party planners and banquet captains are the most stressed-out, anal-retentive people on the planet, because their clients are a bunch of spoiled, hyper-critical, cheap motherfuckers. There is always at least 2 dump trucks worth of food being thrown in the trash at the end of the events I work (while there is a strict policy of withholding a meal to the band).

Were these people just gluttonous on a scale unimaginable to even the most experienced event planners, or was it that the Republicans paying the bill were so cheap that they over-sold $10,000 plates to these stupid suckers and then stiffed them out of their dessert? Either way, it sickens me to the core.

28. Sorry it took so long to reply I have limited Net access
while I am on the road. I wondered myself about the whole dessert thing. I too have been to many events like you and have never seen them "run out of food" like that. A few guys on our crew didn't get to eat either, they came late and were told there were no more plates. I hung around the dessert bar after the incident with the drunk and watched people milling around until someone had to come tell them there was no more dessert. I know what you mean about witholding food from the band, roadies are one rung lower :D

29. Not a problem, bro. Glad you're working.
I'm not sure about the exact hierarchy, but I'm pretty sure that musicians in tuxes who play "Girl from Ipanema" in resort ballrooms come in higher on the musical "scale of shame" and are therefore actually on a lower rung than roadies on tour. :D I know a sax player who is the top call player around here and he gigs in L.A. too; he told me the guys in his band convinced the serving staff at a hotel one time that they didn't want to actually eat, but they wanted to take the fillet mignon steaks that were in the process of going into the trash "home for their dogs". So, because the food was going to dogs instead of those dirty musicians, the servers let them have the steaks - which the band proceeded to eat in the kitchen with their bare hands. You gotta laugh, but stuff like that still really bugs me, even after 8 years. I guess that's a good thing - I haven't let these snooty pricks destroy my self esteem entirely. It's pretty damn close, though. :-)

Your story was really, really bone-chilling. Thanks for posting it.
