Global "dimming".. Catch this NOVA program
Edited on Thu Jun-15-06 11:35 AM by SoCalDem
James Hanson warned us 25 years ago.. Check your PBS schedules..It's on right now in LA, but I watched it a few nigfhts ago on a different PBS channel (I get about 6 different ones )

His hypothesis (proven right) is that dimming has been covering for the actual warming, and as we clean up the air, the dimming is diminishing, and then the really HOT stuff will kick in.. It will accelerate global warming..

oddly enough the aftermath of 911, when there were no planes in the sky, helped him prove his theory..

The show is called "Dimming of the Sun"

4. NOVA is one of my favorite shows.
Dammit!...nothing on the four PBS channels but purple dinosaurs, yogacisers, pink Telletubbies, and cooking.

These are shows you can watch online.. The one I mentioned does not seem to be on the list yet, but you can check your own PBS channels online and maybe TIVO it if it is scheduled later on..

5. Nova Rocks! Frontline Rocks! The News Hour Rocks!
I guess this is why the Repubs are trying to kill PBS, too much quality television for the people.

6. we can't control the sun
Edited on Thu Jun-15-06 01:49 PM by pitohui
i am interested in hanson's ideas and would like to view this program if it becomes available where i can see it but, after a certain point, if the sun is dimming and the end of the world is at nigh, there's nothing we can do about it and it seems to knock the heart out of a person's desire to act for change, since all action is essentially pointless in the not very distant future

like the man said back in the day, might as well go first class if you're on the titanic

it becomes hard to fault people for being only about what they can grab today if there is no future

me again, on edit -- aha, here is a transcript:

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/transcripts/3310_sun.html

they do not think the sun is dimming, they think it seems dimmer to modern people because of particles trapped in the atmosphere, be that as it may, i'm getting a bad classic "double bind" feeling here, you are left feeling it is quite hopeless, which is not a real helpful feeling this time of century, v. interesting information however

7. Global dimming doesn't mean the SUN is actually dimming.
It means that particulates in the air (pollutants) mitigate the amount of sunlight that reaches the earth, acting as a kind of global sunshade. This masks the effect of global warming, which would be much more apparent (i.e. it would be hotter all over the world) if the air were cleaner.

12. Well, Nova's program title is misleading.
They shouldn't call it "Dimming of the Sun" since that isn't actually the case.

14. and because there is more particulate matter, the water droplets in clouds
are smaller and more in number, so they act as a large REFLECTOR and sunlight never makes it all the way to the ground...it also can affect weather terribly...rain where it shouldn;t be and drought in place of seasonal rains..

Once the tipping point is reached, it will spiral out of control...

9. Does it talk about dimming the sun by scattering stuff into space?

One idea I read about (from DU, I'd imagine!) was to launch a bunch of reflective stuff out into space between us and the Sun and cut the amount of light/heat we pick up from.

13. Cleaner air contributes to greenhouse warming due to global brightening...

I posted an article about this back in april. It basically talks about how we are moving out of a period of "global dimming" due to reduced pollutants in the air. This has lead to the current trend call "global brightening"... which scientists theorize will force more global warning...

Here is the journal entry that has a link to the original article.
