New Zogby Polls Shows "Cliffhanger" In Tennessee U.S. Senate Race

A new Zogby poll (a legit telephone poll) shows the Tennessee U.S. Senate race is tight--very tight. In fact, in each matchup between Ford and the prospective Republican candidates, the race in within the margin of error.

Zogby reports, "The race for the U.S. Senate from Tennessee, seen as a key battle in the fight for control of Congress’ upper chamber, is shaping up to be one of the tightest in the nation, a new Zogby International telephone survey shows.

The seat is open because of the pending retirement of Majority Leader Bill Frist, who is contemplating a run for the White House in 2008. The Zogby poll was conducted via telephone with 502 likely voters statewide on June 12, 2006, and carries a margin of error of +/– 4.5 percentage points.

In prospective tests pitting Democrat Harold Ford Jr., a popular Democratic congressman, against three Republican rivals, Ford is running competitive races. Ford is dead even in a head-to-head race with former Congressman Ed Bryant, with each taking 42% of the vote in a potential match-up. Against former Congressman Van Hilleary, Ford trails by a narrow two-point margin, 43% to 41%. Former Chattanooga Mayor Bob Corker leads Ford by the largest margin, 46% to 42%."

"Ford is the best known among the four candidates competing to replace Frist, the survey shows. Just 17% do not know enough to form an opinion of him. His overall favorability rating is at 51%, compared to 31% who have an unfavorable opinion of him.

As for the Republicans, the poll shows that the more voters know about them, the more they like them. Hilleary leads the way with a favorable rating of 54%, an 18% unfavorable rating, and 27% who said they do not know him enough to judge. Corker is viewed favorably by 52%, unfavorably by 18%, and is unknown to 30%. Bryant has a favorable rating from 44%, unfavorable rating of 12%, and is unknown by 43%.

Ford leads by large margins in the western part of Tennessee, which includes his Memphis district. In central and heavily-Republican eastern Tennessee, Ford trails all of the Republican competitors by double–digits.

A key concern for both sides in this race may be turnout and support among members of their own parties. While Ford remains at roughly 80% Democratic support in all three match-ups, Corker does best with his own party, at 84% support among GOP voters. Ford leads all three Republican hopefuls by approximately two-to-one margins among independents, with roughly one-quarter of this group still undecided on the race."

The Republicans are running scared folks! Who would have ever thought a Democrat in this flaming red state would be dead even with his Republican counterparts only five months out from the general election? No one!

Harold Ford Jr. and his uplifting message is resonating with the voters of Tennessee.

They are ready for a new generation of leadership and at the same time, ready to say goodbye to the deciet and failure of the Republicans.

Go Ford!

5. What's the Voting machine situation in Tennessee?
What type of Machine? Are the ReThugs pushing of "new" and "better" machines?

We should all keep an eye on this race, because if Ford loses, it might mean a double loss (both a Senate seat and possibly losing a House seat also to a Bush clone).

6. Not sure
My county is switching to electronic machines. However, my Democratic election commission assures me they are tamper proof and have a traceable paper trail.

As for the rest of the state, I am not sure.

11. I would do some research if I were you, my Democrat SoS...
Edited on Tue Jun-13-06 07:09 PM by Up2Late
... Secretary of State Cathy Cox, here in Georgia, assured us all that the Diebold Accuvote TS were very safe to use, and not to worry that they didn't have a paper trail, that everything would be JUST fine. We haven't had an election that I would trust as fair since 2000.

Now she says there's no reason for her to step down as SoS this year, as she runs against the last TRUE Democrat in our Democratic primary for Governor next month.

Just sayin'.

7. don't know what machines are there...
but I know my millionaire Aunt & Uncle are there, and they don't even pay any attention to the candidates or their positions, they vote for the Republican because of the appearance that the Republicans are supposedly more Christ-like and they'll protect their fortune.

I've had words with my Aunt in a polite way, but how she could not vote for other people's futures is beyond me, as she donates to many charities, but just can't seem to get beyond that hump that the current Repubs are NOT the old conservative guard she prefers...

God bless Mr. Ford, I hope he wins big!

10. No Diebolds in my county.
We're switching to electronic voting machines, but our elections coordinator, having researched the machines, put the ix-nay on 'em because they SUCK.

I think Sequoia, unfortunately, is prevelant in the rural counties, but not in the major cities.

13. I hope they aren't ES&S either, I think the ES&S people and Diebold are...
...brothers or something. They are related to Diebold and shouldn't be trusted either.

Sequoia is Good, hopefully you folks have a lot of those, especially the ones with the paper record printer attached. <http://www.sequoiavote.com/productguide.php?product=AVC%20Edge&type=Introduction>

14. They're not.
I forget what they are - I knew a couple of months back. They're not perfect - none of them are - but they have the least problems and aren't owned by a blantantly Republican hack.

8. I don't see Rove letting this one get away
Look for urban polling places to be bereft of ballots, machines, volunteers, places to pee, etc. Most Dems won't get to vote.

15. I'll let you know.
My district - while not very "urban" in the sense you mean - still votes mostly Democratic.

I've waited in lines before, but not many.

Besides, we have a FANTASTIC and much bally-hooed early voting period. It lasts nearly two weeks.
