I would say I told you so, but...Oh, wait, I just did!

We need to get rid of the giddy optimism that always seems to pervade DU. We need to be tough realists.

My $.02.

1. A position can be toughened with facts alone sometimes.
Fact: Fitzgerald's investigation continues.

Have a little patience with a professional, accomplished man and let him do his job.

27. Evidently my post went right by you...
My point was about patience and caution. Instead of that, for the past, what, two years, DU has been deluged with bullshit posts about "Fitzmas" and how the good times were just around the corner. It was sickening in it's absurd--foolish--optimism.

Personally, I'm neutral on Fitzgerald. I don't see him as a saint, a saviour, or a sinner. He's gone after Repugs in the past which is a good sign. But, on the other hand, this is the big leagues now and he might not be able (or willing) to hit a curve ball. Time will tell.

13. No, he is not
Fitzgerald, when he first registered to vote, registered as an independent, believing it meant that he was affiliating himself with no party.

When he found out that "Independent" was, in fact, a political affiliation, he changed his registration.

He is not a registered Democrat, nor is he a registered Republican.

You have no way of knowing his political sentiments, and to state something so wrong so baldly is just laughable.

Now, you're informed.

leanings may be are two different things some times. Lots of people come to this site calling themselves independents yet they still spout right wing talking points like they were being remote controlled by Rush Limbaugh. I'm sure many of them sincerely believe they are independent.

Fitzgerald was a close associate of the Clinton hating Louis Freeh while he was working in New York. Fitzgerald was nominated for the position of U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois on the recommendation of U.S. Senator Peter Fitzgerald (no relation), a Republican from Illinois who in turn got his name from Louis Freeh. He's also a strong supporter of the patriot act and expressed some frustration that he was not allowed to question certain government officials during his prosecution of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.

Fitzgerald was also criticized in an open letter by John Dean back in November of 05 for not pursuing this investigation with more gusto. Here's a link:

14. Fact wrong
Not sure where you got that from to call it a fact.
He has registered Independent as adult, except where Independent was an actual party. Then he changed it to no party affiliation.
He might have the heart of a republican but we can't call that fact, just guess.

8. Ok, the system's flawed. What do you have that's better?
Are you advocating armed revolution? A storming of the capital?

Give us an alternative. Otherwise I don't see the grounds for debasing Patrick Fitzgerald. My strong hunch is he knows more about the disposition of the case than you and I put together.

24. "back"?
I never left.

We are relying on a system to do a job it was never intended to do. And we hang on every development like a bunch of football fans awaiting a first-down measurement.

If we want justice, we have to make it happen. This country no longer works. This is not a new development. It hasn't worked since at least Iran Contra. Things have gotten much worse since the coup of 2000.

Why are you so hostile? Do you see any consistent evidence of criminal, political or social justice in America today?

30. I'm just dubious now of the prospects of anyone ever doing the right thing
in any substantive way in this country--maybe in the whole world

it's like the fix is already in

if you aren't one of the aristocracy or an uberwealthy oligarch

you don't count

it used to be an ugly secret of capitalism

now it is a celebrated feature of our "ownership society"

and half of Murkans or more at any given moment are just fine with it

it's not you, amigo. it's me. it's a dark time.

31. leftofthedial, in a quick response I would give you Paul Horgan,
Edited on Tue Jun-13-06 02:33 PM by Old Crusoe
an American novelist of the Great Plains (Give Me Possession, Whitewater, A Distant Trumpet, others):

"While admitting to the worst of all possible worlds, we must behave as if we were the best of all possible people." (Paul Horgan, GIVE ME POSSESSION)

And turbulent times demand of all of us that we hold high, and fiercely and steadily honor those who accel and exalt our condition toward betterment. I mean Fitzgerald in the present case and I also mean certain fathers along the Front Range who endeavor to love and care for their young people, even when circumstances conspire against them, and even in a world that is often stingy about the very real and considerable achievments of parents.

You're one of the good guys, goddammit. You've earned a lot of respect on these boards and properly so.

I'm glad you're voting on our side and on behalf of your kids, well, they're damned lucky. A father with a brain and a heart beats the hell out of one who has only one or neither.
