You can be snarky in response to negativism. Some get VERY angry when you criticize them for being so bitter and bringing the mood down for the rest of us who aren't so fired up - we should be allowed to respond in a snarky way if we want. Why should the loud-mouthed bullies get all the attention? Are we not all equal here?

Nice counter, though this can lead to a infinite spiral. A response to a trend on DU is appropriate IMHO - supporting someone who feels like they should apologize for criticizing a trend is what I did. Attracting flies in this way does not surprise me though :D

to gracefully let their fellow DUers' mistakes pass.

However, let's not forget the vitriol that was directed at early skeptics of the Leopold story. I was one of them--a skeptic--but I never once attacked anyone. My problem was with the story, not the people behind it. Nevertheless, there were many Leopold loyalists who formed the equation skepticism=attack=disloyalty all on their own, and some even went so far as to lob the F-word around.

It's a two-way street.

I am going to work .... be out all day. Perhaps the flame wars will have died down to nothing but glowing embers by the time I return. If not, there's always a chance that I might get a good nights sleep NOT reading DU into the wee hours of the morning for a change.

I am not a cannibal and I don't find it becoming in those I hang around with.
