Math formula needed--math wizards out there?
Please excuse the interruption:

I have a number which represents a 3% increase over the original number.
What is the formula to find the original number?

*now back to your regularly scheduled programs...

1. Divide the number by 1.03 to get the original number.

2. Divide by 1.03
As proof, given that a 3% increase over 100 is 103, divide 103 by 1.03

3. Translation
I have a number which represents a 3% increase over the original number.

Translation:
"i have a number" = Y
"which represents" = equals
"3% increase over original" = 1.03 times X.

Y = 1.03 * X.

So, X = Y / 1.03

5. Exactly, and to prove it to yourself.
take your result, and multiply it by 0.03, add that to the result, and you should get the number you started with in your OP.

7.  x = y + .03y
Edited on Sat Jun-10-06 12:16 PM by ima_sinnic
x = 1.03y
x/1.03 = 1.03y/1.03
x/1.03 = y

where x = "a number" (that you mention first) and y = the original number
