"who really pulled the plug on electric cars, and why?"

(Requires RealTime)

This week, NOW talks to director Chris Paine about his upcoming documentary "Who Killed the Electric Car?" The film looks at the hopeful birth and untimely death of the electric car, an environmentally-friendly, cost-saving salvation to some, but a profit barrier to others.

In a film that has all the elements of a murder mystery, Paine points the finger at car companies, the oil industry, bad ad campaigns, consumer wariness, and a lack of commitment from the U.S. government.

" is about why the only kind of cars that we can drive run on oil. And for a while there was a terrific alternative, a pure electric car," Paine said.

In 1996, General Motor's (G.M.) launched the first modern-day commercially available electric car, the EV1. The car required no fuel and could be plugged in for recharging at home and at a number of so-called battery parks.

An excellent complement to . In fact, at the Seattle theater in which we saw AIT last weekend, they showed the trailer to Who Killed the Electric Car?.

4. not sure
I do intend to check this out . I do know back in jr high 1962 in the day where we had actual science fairs done in the gym at the end of the school day GM stopped by with a display . Here GM had a working model about two feet long of a solar energy powered electic motor driven car . Their rant was EVERYONE ! would be driving these in the next ten years , well I'm still waiting . This was during 1962 in Schaumberg Ill .

Do I believe it was the oil companies , absolutely , without a doubt in my mind . The auto manufacturers not only use oil to manufacture the plastics but also maintainence required including all the lubrication and other assorted supplies used to clean and repair and of course the gas . I don't think it was a strong arm project on the auto manufacturers either , I feel it was a partnership .

The oil companies along with the auto manufacturer also destroyed the rail lines in one big hurry .

It does seem rather late in the game to become aware now , not that there is not hope but it is one much larger mountain to climb . You now have to convince a hell of alot more people alternate fuel is a good idea . Also what damage will be done getting rid of the millions of new cars now pumping out spoil and as I write here more are being built .

I don't want to come off as a lost cause artist but I don't know how you erase the past , all I see are history books picked up by a mutant surviving generation reading about all our ignorant failures based on stupidity and greed . I thing the cover of the book should depict bush with that pathetic smirk holding a gas pump nozzle and the rest of his crew waving near by .
