Keith Olbermann will do spot on O'Really's version of Malmedy!!!
O'Really thinks US troops massacred captive SS officers at Malmedy during WW2. He's got it backwards. He's said it twice on his show.....both times to WES CLARK! This is going to be a keeper.

47. He was. . . . . and did he ever!
KO was visibly shaking with fury as he hauled Bill-o's ass on the carpet. I wanted to say, "Chill, Keith, or you're gonna have a stroke."

I'm no gung-ho defender of "the troops," and I have no doubt there have been far too many atrocities committed by American military personnel over the ages, more than we'll ever probably know about. But O'Reilly's double fuck-up, and with Wes Clark both times, and his failure to admit his mistake -- and then FAUX's scrubbing of the transcript. . . . . .

Well, it's no wonder I never allow that station to be on my television.

2. So what's his point then?
Edited on Thu Jun-01-06 07:24 PM by Canuckistanian
That American troops have a fine and honorable tradition of massacring unarmed people?

What could he possibly gain from this argument if IF he got the facts right?

3. Actually, that was precisely his point!!
Somebody posted transcripts of both shows with Clark, and O'Really seemed to be making the argument that scandal about war crimes should be suppressed because war crimes are the customary and time-honored tradition of the US military and are endorsed by the US government.

That's exactly how it sounded.

27. ayup, that's what it sounded like
My dad lives in a camper and whenever he's staying near a place that catches Limbo he'll wind up saying the same crazy shit about any given topic. Last year it was saying that torture is no big deal, happens in every war, only pollyanna liberals think you can run the world without torture. It's the same good ol' boy "way of the world" justification trotted out when you have rich boys getting off scott-free on rape charges, presidents (of both parties) pardoning criminals, and news of various corrupt shit from Washington hitting the air. The ports deal gave us the same argument: "This is the way the world works. You think it's any other way?" And to that I have to reply "Just because it's fucked up, should we accept that?" Same answer that should be given to idiots mouthing off about supply and demand. "Rats and roaches live by competition under the laws of supply and demand; it is the privilege of human beings to live under the laws of justice and mercy."

Suffice to say, the repuke approach is to justify all evils, no matter how reprehensible. I think there was a good Dancing Bug about this one, showing Pukes justifying the eating of live babies on television after Bush scarfs one down.

When you can't deny something bad, pretend there's nothing wrong with it in the first place.

And then deny it again.

31. grr
Well, the history books say that after Malmedy the rule was that there would be no taking of high-ranking SS prisoners. (don't have the source to cite on that one, I just remember reading it.) I also remember from history books first-hand accounts of individual soldiers committing acts of individual attrocity. There was a first person account by one soldier of a squadmate who would shoot any German prisoner he could lay his hands on. I think it was because his brother had gotten killed earlier in the war or something like that.

But really, none of that is the point. One crime should not excuse another. That is the way the Republicans think. "You can't say anything about Abramhoff because I think a Democrat took a bribe once. That means you can't prosecute corrupt Republicans." Huh?! So if Germans shot American POW's and Americans shot German POW's, that means nobody can complain if 60 some years later we're gunning down Iraqi civilians? HUH?!?!?!

As far as shooting prisoners goes, war sucks. In the Pacific, it was just about impossible to safely take Japanese prisoners. For one thing, most fought to the death, period. Second, some of those who feigned surrender were actually using it as a ploy to get close enough to American GI's to then throw grenades. At that point, no commander worth his salt would risk his troops with capturing surrendering Japanese. I remember reading accounts of Japanese sailors getting pulled onto American ships after a battle and they were carrying grenades and other weapons and then tried to attack their rescuers! Interviews with surviving Japanese soldiers and sailors helped to explain their state of mind. The humiliation they felt at being captured would be about as shattering as if an American was caught by his mother having gay sex and liking it. For them it was a shame that could not be lived with which explains why so few did.

It's too debilitating to try and understand the Republican point of view.

65. don't have the links
I don't have the links to the original books I read. I can't even think of the titles to direct you there. Here's the important point, though: common sense tells us that yes, there were individual acts of attrocity by American soldiers in WWII, just as in any war, same as there are acts of murder, theft, rape, etc, committed by Americans in any war. The key difference here is whether such activity is condoned by the chain of command. A military unit with proper command and control engages in warfare, not murder. A unit seeking only to kill from bloodlust is of little military value because it would be jeopardizing the mission in favor of taking more heads. Perfect example is with fighter escorts -- their job is NOT to shoot down enemy fighters, their job is to keep the bombers from getting shot down! If they shoot down some fighters keeping them away from the bombers, great! But if they pursue a fighter to destroy it and leave the bombers vulnerable to another fighter, they did not do their jobs.

In WWII, it was not our policy to commit murder, terror, and reprisal killings on the ground. (You could argue that the city bombing campaigns were terrorist acts but we'll ignore the air war for the sake of this argument.) The Germans took so much flak for what they did because a) they lost and b) terror was an official policy. See their attrocities here. http://members.iinet.net.au/~gduncan/massacres.html

What makes Gulf War 2 different from our previous wars is the chain of command's condoning of actions previously considered reprehensible by our armed forces. Torture? That's what the commies did! I don't think that Rumsfeld sent a memo down to shoot civilians in the same way he did to torture prisoners but I do think that there is an official attitude of "we don't want to hear bad news" so there is zero accountability going on here. If you are the LT and you find out your soldiers did something bad, your boss doesn't want to hear about it. His boss doesn't want to hear about it. Nobody up the chain of command wants to hear about it. So you job is to make sure they don't hear about it. I hear that the families were paid $25,000 a head (previously on Olbermann) and as the guy said, that ain't the kind of money a private carries around in his back pocket.

86. This not about the despatching of senior SS officers for the
vermin they were, but the massacring of civilians, civilians of both sexes and all ages, in a war of aggression.

"(You could argue that the city bombing campaigns were terrorist acts but we'll ignore the air war for the sake of this argument.)"

You might argue it, but it wouldn't wash with me.

The Axis waged a total war of aggression, of imperialism, which relies on terrorism to suppress occupied peoples. That means civilian massacres, period. If you wage such a total war of aggression, you can't complain when the defenders take the gloves off, and, on the macro level, return like for like. But fortunately, one individual personally torturing another, is a specialism of the pychopath, and not something any even half-human individual would want to engage in.

The bombing in WWII was not principally undertaken as a weapon of torture, but of destruction and, yes, terror - unlike napalm, gas, chemicals, etc., which aims at terror and torture.

One of the stated reasons for the bombing (as well as targeting industrial sites, some having been moved there) was to lower the morale of the German population, but I think some of those raids would have been more for plain vengeance than anything else. And in the context of WWII, I do not even consider it to have been immoral, but amoral. Formally, of course - as all violence is; but not actually, because in such confrontations, attitudes on both sides harden, and it's too late for ethical calibrations. And if any invading army had treated countrymen of mine, never mind my family, like the Nazis treated milliions of Russians, I'd have bombed them all into oblivion in less than a heartbeat, if I'd had the chance.

The sad fact is, of course, that the Nazi/corporatist/imperialist beast - the old Adam - as we can see now, all too well, recrudesces cyclically, and was by no means uniquely German. In fact, I expect God to hold the monied people of the West living at that time (and today) more culpable than the Germans themselves. Hitler never enjoyed an electoral majority before he came to power, but our monied boys and girls thought he and Mussolini were the tops. They refused to give any assistance to German resistance fighters who, at great personal risk, sought help from our leaders in the UK, and the former had of course for some years supported the Nazis. I doubt very much that they would have denied support, moral or economic, even proximately, during that time (when Churchill was a voice in the wilderness). The slogan of Quintin Hogg, later to become Thatcher's Mr Law and Order, when he was standing for the Tories in Oxford, was "A vote for Hogg is a vote for Hitler." AND HE WON THE SEAT. When it comes down to it, I doubt if any of the leading European countries or America doesn't deserve to be wiped off the face of the earth. But then, that's original sin. We have to have been preserved for a worthwhile purpose.

Way to set the record straight and call BS on O'Jackass when you hear it, Keith!

49. Are you KIDDING? You way underestimate their shamelessness.
For starters, 90 percent of their pinhead regular audience is unlikely to ever learn about the facts laid down by Keith O. so they can continue to live their lives as angry little balls of hate, blissfully unaware.

And boy do we ever need one.

Best O'Leilly smackdown ever. I can hear the air escaping from his giant pinhead from Joisey.

54. Something happened tonight. Something special. Something extra.
Edited on Thu Jun-01-06 08:45 PM by Skip Intro
This was above and beyond any smackdown/takedown/poke a stick at the fearmongering blowhard lightweight impostors KO does now and then.

Something real happened to me watching that. I saw something real happen to KO as he delivered it. A mark was made, a line was drawn (or crossed), a flag was moved - something extra happened with this tonight.

I was listening from the dining room and walked into the LR to watch, and I was gripped in a way I hadn't been gripped by tv in a long time, if ever. It was real. And right. And rare. I was mesmerized and stirred. I felt what he said.

I don't know if it was just the genuine and raw emotion that KO exhibited tonight, or if it was something even more, but something moved. Something happened.

I know this is my third post in the thread, but I just finally got over some of my original speechlessness.

If you're reading this and didn't see Countdown earlier, watch the replay, please.

wow!

Good thing Billo is losing his audience. Not many watch him anymore.

61. I'll watch it again at 9AM tomorrow. I agree with you 100% Skip Intro.
Keith's display of outrage and indignation was a watershed event, IMHO. It was exactly what was needed and I hope to see it replayed many times, and oft. Listening to Keith is like listening to Gary Charles at the Central Presbyterian Church in Atlanta. The message is so exquisite that you don't want the sermon/lecture to end.

63. You're spot on in your interpretation
KO was simply mesmerizing. Everything about it was perfect in that way some things are so perfect ... storms ..... accidents ..... disasters .... and indignation.

The expression on KO's face is what did it for me. His presence came out of the teevee and slapped me smack on top of the head. It was visceral and palpable. If he wasn't serious, then he should win a special Emmy for that acting. I've never been more convinced.

75. I agree. I had his thesaurus out to write that one. He dialed it up to 11
He savored every adjective and adverb and showed genuine outrage rarely seen on the sNooze. It seemed like he was deliberately inviting Fox or O'Reilly to sue him so he could stuff the facts down their throats.

62. Nope he didn't....on purpose...
He knew the Clarkies, and DU'ers would jump on this. The look on Wes's face was that "I can't believe he is saying this", and if I confront him, he will go balistic. Watch the video , I posted in #59. You will see his expression. He knows BO is full of BS, especially since BO did it the first time. BO always tries to outsmart, outtalk, Wes. Not gonna happen! And Wes knows it! He lets him fall in the hole!!

his ears and when he tried to protest, braying Bill just talked over him, and changed the subject, -you know how he operates. This time, you could tell Clark was giving him rope, his eyes were just glittering.
(On edit, I just re-watched the first instance, and I think had merged the two in my memory.)

O'Reilly: General! You need to look at the Malmedy massacre in World War Two, and the 82nd Airborne who did it!

Update: 10/04 22:03 GMT: As C&L points out, the Fox News Transcript of the show omits the final three words of O'Reilly's sentence:

O'REILLY: General, you need to look at the Malmedy massacre in World War II and the 82nd Airborne.

79. More than an ass-whuppin.
More important than just an ass-whuppin' or a beatdown.

This may well prove to be the first nuclear blast in a war to restore TRUTH to journalism. At least I hope so. Keith, usually rather "light" (but sharp) in his skewering of The Giant Head, went for the jugular. And found it. I've never seen him so righteously angry.

It was beautiful.

85. Account of what happened at Malmedy. US troops were victims.

http://www.historynet.com/wwii/blmassacreatmalmedy /
Really detailed account.

World War II: Massacre At Malmdy During the Battle of the Bulge
By carefully separating fact from fiction, a clearer picture emerges of the events surrounding the infamous execution of American POWs during the Battle of the Bulge.

By Michael Reynolds

The delightful Belgian town of Malmdy will forever be associated with the most infamous massacre of American troops in World War II. And yet, but for the presence of an Associated Press correspondent there in early January 1945, it is doubtful that this terrible incident would have ever achieved international notoriety. "Nazis Turned Machine Guns on GI POWs" wrote Hal Boyle in his January 1945 Stars and Stripes article, and from that first graphic account sprung a plethora of books and articles about the so-called Malmdy Massacre. Few of these accounts are based on fact, and most are embellished and inaccurate.
