Today in Afghanistan--message from the US Embassy
A lovely day for a stroll around Kabul--not!

Warden Message

May 30, 2006

Current Situation in Kabul

After yesterday's demonstrations, there were no protests in Kabul today. It is anticipated that the Ministry of Interior will again impose a curfew on the city tonight, from 10:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. The U.S. Embassy strongly urges America citizens to obey this curfew.

The Consular Section will be open for normal business tomorrow, May 31. The U.S. Embassy reminds American citizens to continue to practice good personal security, to be aware of their environment, to avoid areas where people are congregating, and to maintain a low profile. The Embassy particularly recommends that U.S. citizens in all parts of Afghanistan avoid traveling alone at any time.

Old Bagram Road continues to be off limits to official Americans. Visits to restaurants and hotels are restricted to official business with prior approval from the security office. Unofficial travel is limited during daylight hours and is forbidden after dark. The Embassy cautions against movements in other potential target areas, such as:

Key national or international government establishments;
National or international military facilities, including ISAF;
Locations popular with the international community, including restaurants and Internet cafes; and
Areas with high population density, i.e. bazaars.

Americans in Afghanistan are urged to monitor the local news and maintain contact with the U.S. Embassy in Kabul. As the Embassy continues to develop information on any potential security threats to U.S. citizens in Afghanistan, it will share them with the American community via the Warden System. We take this opportunity to remind the community of the continuing threats outlined in the current Travel Warning for Afghanistan and Worldwide Caution Public Announcement. The full text of each can be found at http://travel.state.gov. Updated information may also be obtained by contacting the American Embassy in Kabul at [email protected] or by calling the Consular Section on 070-20-1908.

The Department of State also shares information through its consular information program documents, available on the Internet at http://travel.state.gov. In addition to information on the Internet, U.S. travelers may obtain up-to-date information on security conditions by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll-free in the U.S. or outside the U.S. and Canada on a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444.

Sincerely,

Consular Section
U.S. Embassy

2. The Emperor is losing Afghanistan too. The truth is setting us free.
We had no right to invade other countries and try to make them live like we do. Iraq and Afghanistan do not want our life. They have their own lives, their own culture and their own beliefs. Bush had no right to impose his will on other countries.

The sooner we leave the Middle East the better for us.

3. How about opening up a
Driving school in Kabul? They can call it the "US Remedial Driving School" to help the military avoid other drivers in traffic.

5. Many Afghans resent foreigners' presence

Afghan protesters throw stones at an U.S. military vehicle after a traffic accident in Kabul, Afghanistan, Monday, May 29, 2006. The deadly traffic accident involving U.S. troops sparked a riot in the capital Monday, with gunfire heard near the U.S. Embassy. At least three people died in the accident and a fourth person was reportedly killed by gunfire, police said. (AP Photo/Fraidoon Pooyaa)

By Edward Harris, Associated Press Writer | May 30, 2006

KABUL, Afghanistan --Western aid workers drive past Afghan beggars cradling naked, dirty children. U.S. military vehicles race through trash-strewn streets with their guns pointed into traffic.

To many Afghans, foreigners are a privileged elite, earning hefty salaries and given to drinking alcohol while this shattered Islamic nation remains mired in violence and poverty.

That divide helped stoke Monday's deadly anti-Western riots, the latest of several bouts of unrest that have wracked Afghanistan in the past year. The worst riots seen in Kabul for years began after a U.S. military truck whose brakes failed careered down a hill and plowed into cars at an intersection, killing at least one Afghan ...
