the judges whose nominations never found their way out of the REPUBLICAN controlled hearings for Clinton's nominees (pocket filibusters)? He talked about the Senate filibuster as a whole?

10. I tivo'd it back and typed it out word for word
and the thread was locked.

Basically, he said that he will vote him out of committee due to his commitment to the President and the the Rep caucus and once he gets on the floor, whether he votes yea or nay will be his own independent decision.

so, he is voting to get him out of committee and then will vote as he sees fit on the floor.

No way he is going to vote yes unless they make him some sort of great deal for some future need.

24. that's the speculation that will overflow GD for the next several
days. I'm guessing there will be a filibuster, not so much because of the abortion issues but because of the unitary executive stuff. If they put someone on the bench that gives the President that much power, it will lessen their own power/status. Do they really want that?

26. Wasn't Specter distinguishing between his job as Committee Chair
and as a Senator out of Committee?

He's very protective of the rights of the Congress and Executive tresspassing on those rights.

So, he'll vote Alito out of Committee but Bush better not count his vote just yet on the floor.

if Alito was denied if he/she thought someone would be nominated of whom they could approve. It seemed odd, but listening to him now...

I wonder if he is getting ready to spin his approval of Alito around the "all the others listed on the President's potential nominee list were worse."

Roe v. Wade was decided primarily on the Ninth Amendment to the US Constitution, a part of the Bill of Rights. The Court's decision in this case was that the Ninth Amendment, in stating that "the enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people," protected a person's right to privacy.

To strike down Roe v Wade is to strike down that assertion: i.e., that American citizens have a right to privacy.

Many people believe that if they overturn Roe v Wade abortions will go down and all that stuff because it'll be illegal. Not true. It'll be the same. Roe v Wade is about privacy and safety for women.
