I just fed 30 homeless veterans for free...Thank you McDonald's!!!!
I rushed over to Mc'D's at 1022am trying to make it before breakfast ended at 1030. Well I barely made it, in fact as I was pulling through, an employee came outside to change out the menu. Once I got to the window waiting to pick up my screwed up order, I wondered what they did with all the leftovers from breakfast. SO I asked to speak to the manager and I said, "Would you be able to give me what's leftover from breakfast to take to some homeless veterans?"

he said, "Come on in, we'll fix you up"

I waited for what seemed like 15 minutes and then two workers from the back came out with three of the biggest Mc.D's bags I've ever seen!! One was filled to the top with pancake breakfasts. the other with Mc Muffins of every sort and the third had so many hashbrowns and sausage burritos I can't even count that ....well I'm a musician, I can only count to 4. but anyway, just thought I'd share this with you. Maybe you cana try it too! The manager told me that pretty much all McD's throww away what's left when they switch to l lunch

Maybe you can try it too

36. Thank you for the suggestion! this was just a spur of the moment --
thing. I saw the dude come out to change the drive thru menu, and I'm thinkin' "There's no way they made exactly the right amount of hash browns for the breakfast cut off time. What are they doint with the leftovers?"

So goodgirl and I took it all down to Volunteers of America for them to distribute (after I ate a couple of breakfast burritos on the way down there:) and all told, there was enough stuff there to feed 30+ or more homeless Vets.

But I have to wonder if the manager didn't cook extra stuff for you?
Fast food places don't usually cook that much stuff ahead of time.....that would be a lot of waste.

Either way.....it's fantastic.

/.and it turned out that three of them were filled FILLED with eggs, sausage and ham, and biscuits/muffins/mcgriddles/, and he'd given me a bag of bagels too...

so goodgirl and I spent about 25 minutes assembling sandwiches, and then we thought, "this is stupid, why not serve them up buffet style and let the guys fix 'em the way they want?" so we took them all apart, and weaved a quilt of profanity during the drive downtown :)

14. Get out of here!
That's great that they helped you out like that but I think somebody screwed up. It was well-intentioned so I don't blame them for not knowing.

When we tried to get my school to donate cooked leftovers to the local homeless shelter, we were informed that our hearts were in the right place but they are not allowed to accept prepared food for safety liability reasons. They can only take non-perishable packaged items in cans or boxes.

You're probably taking a legal risk but good for you for helping veterans on Memorial Day. :patriot: It's the very least we can do considering what they've done for us.

32. He is a "good samaritan."
An individual who donates food will not be held liable if there is something wrong with the food. It's called a good samaritan law in New York.

44. Well, the good samaritan law is usually more serious...
Usually like "You can't be held liable for breaking someone's leg accidentally while pulling them from a burning car, or breaking someone's ribs while giving CPR...". I would be interested to know if accidentally giving spoiled food to someone would fall under this law.

59. Those liability considerations may not be true everywhere
When I worked at a drop-in center for street youths in Portland, Oregon, the meals were all cooked by volunteers from churches and civic organizations and were brought in every afternoon.

One day, a storm caused the cancellation of a banquet at a country club, and the caterer donated the banquet food to the drop-in center.

68. Yeah, there is alot of variation. Our local health dept recently
put a stop to people donating fresh meat to kitchens, etc. They were concerned about whether the wild animals contributed could be carrying parasites, whether the meat was harvested properly, etc. It's too bad, because alot of hunters around here donate excess meat, usually venison.

Before the big blank space at end of your post, you were leaving with huge bags of free food.

What did you do with it, besides eating the breakfast that you personally went there for?

Did you already know of a big group of hungry homeless vets waiting for it, or were you scamming McDonalds?

Getting high with friends and then driving to Jack in the Box at 2 a.m., right before they closed to get all the leftovers for free. We'd usually throw the teenage drive through worker a few bucks, and come home with three bags of burgers and fries... :puke:

29. When I worked fast food
A woman showed up every morning to pick up the leftover biscuits for a soup kitchen. I guess some places don't like to take prepared more perishable food. I don't know what the usual rules on that are, but my college dining hall said that there were reasons that they couldn't give away most of the leftover hot food.

they donate all their leftover baked bread and other baked goods to local soup kitchens. Hot food I think, for health reasons, cannot be given away (although Mickey D's didn't care) because it can't be kept up to temperature...that's just a guess

95. The reasons are usually related to the health department
It's a "chain of custody" thing. If someone gets sick, it could create a legal bightmare, so lots of places do not donate..

Our deli-dairy people would pull stuff the day before the "dates", and were ordered to use a box cutter and open all the lunchmeats & pot the lids from all the dairy.. Made for a super smelly mess, but they were afraid that people would take the food from the dumpster, get sick, and then sue the grocery store..

They did donate day old bread, and canned goods, but anything that was "fresh" or had a ell-by date on it..they deliberately trashed.

The organizations who collect and redistribute food, often have paperwork that recipients must sign.,.so they are not sued..

Edited on Mon May-29-06 02:56 PM by in_cog_ni_to
is before they enter the restaurant? Baaaad excuse! Even if it is their excuse, who gives a rats ass if a customer sees a homeless person eating out of the dumpster? Maybe, JUST MAYBE, it would put a fire under their asses to HELP THE HOMELESS after seeing something like that. Some of the people in this country have become so hard and cold. It's so sad what we've become..:(

dumpster enclosure one time. the manager and several employees came out all alarmed and shit asking me what i was doing. i think they were afraid i might be breaking in their dumpster to get food or something. when i told them i only urinated, they seem relieved.

61. Lawsuits in case of illness.
Some charities get leftover food from businesses by signing liability wavers, or like that there. The greater Chicago Food Depository is one such charity.
It most likely is against corporate policy, but screw'em. I would not give out the location of that McDonalds.

92. Food waste is a problem
But leaving dumpsters unlocked is not the answer.

The bigger problem isn't about the people suing, its about the people getting sick because they end up eating spoiled food.

65. thank you very much, Mc'D's deserves props too for letting me take the
leftovers in the first place. some restaurants can be kinda snooty when it comes to that sort of thing. I wonder what the Freepukes have to say about this? Probably that I don't support the troops because I fed them McDe's and it's bad for them

71. I am proud of you!
The last time I had asked at an establishment about this, I was told they had to throw out all the food for insurance reasons.

Unfortunately, I gave up and thought it was a new trend.

You have inspired me to inquire of other places to see if they don't have the restrictions.

Thanks!

81. Thank the manager for being a human.
McDonald's is a global megacorporation. It doesn't love or hate or give a crap about your gratitude. If it does anything charitable, it is 100% in the interest of PR and keeping customers coming.

But the manager at the Mickey D's you went to sounds like a good guy. Kudos to HIM.

That was a wonderful thing you and goodgirl did. It shows much of your character, to immediately think of others, and get the hungry fed. I hope others can try this, too. Anyway, not everybody would have had the compassion to make the connection between food being wasted, and getting that food to the ones who needed it. :toast: :yourock:

When I worked there years ago, they were very strict about throwing away the food. It could NOT be given away - very explicit. I always thought it was dumb.

93. last I heard...
America wastes about 40% of the food we have.

I have worked in food service in the private sector and for a university...er and also a stay in the local jail for a summer.

Anyhoo, it does not sound like a stretch that the 40% is too far from the truth, much of what is thrown out is for liability because of fears about food poisoning. But I have managed to risk my job by sneaking food out for someone in need a time or two.

I avoid fast food restaurants because they will cook more than they need to eliminate waiting for customers, so they throw out a lot of food before it sits around too long.

It's a nice story, but keep in mind that the corporate giants that make up this industry is very leary about law suits from serving bad food.

Too bad we can't get a good samaritan law to protect food donations...or maybe we can.

me. I've been wanting to tell Rita Cosby to lay off the 'Roids before she grows a beard. And the Bushies would Loooooooooove a nice heartwarming distraction story right about now.

Panera Bread donates every day whatever baked goods they have left over And I realize that baked goods aren't quite the same as a sausage mc muffin with egg with regard to Federal regulations for food safety, but I should be able to walk in there with a special container like a caterer would use and go feed the hungry..
