Bush Defends Guantanamo Bay Prison Camp
By BARRY SCHWEID, AP Diplomatic Writer 50 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - President Bush rejected on Friday a suggestion by Germany's new chancellor that the U.S. prison camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, be shut down.

The camp on the U.S. Navy base there is "a necessary part of protecting the American people," Bush said after meeting with Chancellor Angela Merkel at the White House.

***

It was Merkel's first visit to the United States as chancellor. She took power last November after an extremely close and protracted race with former German Chancellor
Gerhard Schroeder.

Bush jokingly made reference to both that race, which took three weeks to decide, and his own victory in 2000 over Democrat Al Gore, which was decided only after weeks of suspense by a Supreme Court decision.

"We didn't exactly landslide our way into office," Bush said.

10. Merkel is trouble. i/e Iran and such.

All the conservatives are lining up behind the new Emperor.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angela_Merkel

Merkel advocated a strong transatlantic partnership and German-American friendship. In the spring of 2003, defying strong public opposition, Merkel came out in favour of the U.S. invasion of Iraq, describing it as "unavoidable" and accusing Chancellor Gerhard Schröder of anti-Americanism. This led some critics to characterize her as an American lackey. She criticised the government's support for Turkish Membership in the European Union and favoured a "privileged partnership" instead. In doing so, she was seen as being in unison with an overwhelming majority of Germans in rejecting Turkish membership in the European Union, particularly due to fears that large waves of immigration may impose an unbearable burden on Germany and that there would be too much Islamist influence within the EU.

12. Isn't it?
The asshat's gall never ceases to amaze me.

Just because his memory is shot from booze and cocaine, doesn't mean the rest of us have forgotten about his stupid "mandate" statements.

IIRC... I think that face says "Oh my God, I cannot believe this idiot is supposed to be running their country." I heard the list of things she wanted to talk to him about, and had the thought that it'd be amazing if he could hold down his half of a conversation on most of them. Sigh.

18. Now, if instead of 5-4 he had won 6-3, THAT would have been a landslide!
Two-to-one margin, after all.
