breaking CNN :Attorney General and FBI chief indicated they might resign
Edited on Sat May-27-06 10:12 AM by cal04
Attorney General and FBI chief indicated they might resign in showdown over search of congressman's office, sources tell CNN.

Why are they posting this as breaking. Wasn't this out yesterday?

Attorney General prepared to quit over Jefferson probe: NYT
Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and FBI director Robert S. Mueller III said this week that they were prepared to quit if the White House directed them to relinquish evidence seized in a disputed search of a House member's office, The New York Times reported on Saturday.

Citing government officials, the Times reported that Gonzalez was joined in raising the possibility of resignation by the deputy attorney general, Paul McNulty, who told associates that they had an obligation to protect evidence in a criminal case and would not be willing to follow a White House order to return the material to Congress. McNulty, the newspaper said, was instrumental in the resignation threats.

1. First I've heard of it...
Edited on Sat May-27-06 10:03 AM by Cooley Hurd
On edit - the reason CNN gave was that the WH wanted Gonzo & the FBI to return the items seized from Jefferson's office, but Gonzo was against it.

Like THAT'S believable...:eyes:

19. Why did Bush seal the files from Jefferson's office
This looks like a smoke screen. As soon as Hastert told Bush what was in the docs and files taken from Jefferson's office, Bush immediately had them sealed, ostensibly to protect Jefferson's rights :eyes:

Now they're "punishing" these two to make it look as though they did something wrong, even though its completely in line with Bushco policy.

Someone screwed up and their at risk of having their criminal operations compromised.

8. It's a Rover trick...
I agree with this poster at Daily Kos:

Don't be fooled by this silly posturing, friends. It has the mark of Karl Rove all over it. This "leak" is a way to keep this controversy on the front page, relegating more substantive discussion of all the administration's failures to the back pages.

Am I the only one asking the question why the only Democratic congressman under investigation had his office raided? They never even raided Duke Cunningham's office, and he pleaded guilty. It's a typical Karl Rove twofer--smear a Democrat while pushing your boss's failures out of the public eye.

"Well clear of political considerations" means political considerations are at the FOREFRONT of this move. Again, it's the way Karl works--deny you're doing what you're doing before anyone even has a chance to accuse you of it. It's high time the corporate media got wise to his machinations.

13. McNulty Worked For Henry Hyde
...during the Clinton inquisition. He's a partisan hack who seems to be in the middle of several important cases right now...including Abramoff. I don't trust this dude one lick.

This is a true case of the foxes investigating the raid on the henhouse. McNulty's also the one who has shot down the ABC story into the investigation of Hasstert.

14. This story is such bullshit. Gonzales is there because he's a Yes Man.
Or maybe "Made Man" would be a bit more accurate. Either way, he does not stand up to his Lord Bush. That's the whole reason he has a job.

16. What I want to know is, where are the COURTS in this major-league
disagreement. Did Bush up and declare himself the Chief Arbiter, head of the judiciary branch, too????

Where does HE get off "sealing" records. I thought that was the province of judges and court orders...........

17. Only an ethical person would
People with ethics would consider resigning. That's why Gonzalez would never. The little Torturer General embodies the phrase "the banality of evil" that was used to describe Eichmann as he constantly finds new and better ways to use the law to subvert the law.

and the butts of all the fraudulent Republican congressman. If they step in to try to help a Democrat then they can turn around and do the same for the Republicans.

21. CNN: Political dispute over FBI raid nears showdown
Two senior administration officials said the showdown over the FBI's raid of Rep. William Jefferson's office last weekend had reached what one called "the tipping point," with threats of high-level resignations. Top Justice Department officials --Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, Deputy Attorney General Paul McNulty and FBI Director Robert Mueller --indicated they would resign if forced to give the seized materials back, the officials said.

The resignation threats were relayed to the White House midweek as President Bush came under fierce pressure from Republican House Speaker Dennis Hastert and other congressional leaders to return the materials. Some in the administration, led by the vice president's office, argued the FBI overreached and violated constitutional law.
