Sex offender moves again, another town meeting
The newspaper's been running story after story on this guy... how exactly do they think the public will respond?

New meeting slated after 'sexually violent predator' moves

MONTROSE, Colo. — A man recently released from prison as a designated sexually violent predator will again be the subject of a public meeting, after he moved Wednesday from the city into the county.

Nelson Lesperance was identified at a public meeting May 16. He'd just been released from prison after serving time for sexually assaulting two young girls. The nature of his offense, plus the date of his conviction and other factors caused him to be designated as "sexually violent," but police said previously this didn't automatically make him any more dangerous than other sex offenders.

At the time, he was living within the city limits. Helen Bock, victim assistance coordinator and sex offender registrar for the Montrose County Sheriff's Office confirmed Lesperance moved into the county Wednesday. In accordance with legal requirements, he re-registered as a sex offender with the MCSO.

(snip)

"We need to warn everybody not to harass or intimidate him," Bock said. "He's just doing as he's told to do by state statute. He has a right to live where he wants to live."

1. Suggested neighborhood for him...
Right next to the county landfill where he belongs! Well actually, he belongs in it, but I'll settle for next to and reeking of garbage so people are sure to stay away.

2. How about a big tatooed "s" on his forehead?
Since it's not like he paid his debt to society or anything.

Or should we all just grab our torches and pitchforks?

Anyone who can't see that these registration laws are a dangerous precedent and do nothing to stop crime is a fool.

Your neighborhood? -- Naziville.

6. but it's okay for murderers and rapists to go about their business . . .
after completing their sentences? . . . this whole movement to label sex offenders and treat them worse than other criminals is just another neocon ploy to stir their base . . .

"sex offender" covers a lot of ground, and varies from jurisdiction to jurisdiction . . . should someone be so labeled because he took a leak on his own wooded property and was spotted by a couple of kids who were trespassing? . . . (actually happened -- probably more than once) . . .

or an 18-year-old who had consensual sex with his 16-year-old girlfriend (who, btw, was quite experienced in the ways of the world)? . . .

and god forbid his partner was another male! . . . that's death penalty stuff! . . . (also true for the rapidly growing "dominionist" sect) . . .

making convicted sex offenders pariahs for the rest of their lives is cruel and unusual punishment -- and will do nothing to stop sex crimes . . .

3. Why oh why can't people just watch thier kids?
There are awful people in this world. The cops don't keep track of most of them. When we use databases instead of our own eyes and instincts and common sense we do our children a disservice.

5. If these guys are so likely to re-offend, I'd rather they stayed in prison
or were sent to a mental institution so maybe treatments for thier problems could be developed.

Either they're safe to re-release or they're not, and half-assed measures that do nothing to protect children that common sense and parental vigilance can't do already don't seem like a solution.
