Stupid fucking Google ads!
I just responded to a thread about what an idiot Bill O'Rile-y is, and what do I get? Ads trying to sell me his books!

I really don't want to come to Democratic Underground, a little oasis of rationality in a world of craziness, and have ads thrown in my face trying to sell me my enemies. It's just not cool! I guess that's what I get for not donating during this last drive, eh? Ads trying to sell me O'Rile-y's books?

If I write the words Ann Coulter next, will I get and ad trying to sell me "Treason"? Let's find out...

1. You probably will.
The ads are generated by the context on the page.

Install an ad-blocker on your browser or just ignore them.

2. Switch, if you can, to Firefox........
The ads are hardly there, and there are no popups with Firefox.

It really is the best, I believe. I don't mind these ads at all, and if it brings in revenue for DU, good.

Or else the people who are really upset by them can make great big donations to DU, and maybe then the ads will disappear.

Just a thought .................

5. Firefox must be the reason the ads don't bother me at all.
And yes, if you type "Ann Coulter," an ad based on those
keywords may appear.

I have Google ads at the top of my fluff blog
(FUTURE CURB ORNAMENTS OF AMERICA),
and they don't interfere at all.

Can you install on your PC, or do you have to get an admin to do it? If you can, get a Google toolbar... complete with pop-up blocker.

45. Ironic...
that your work is less secure than your home computer. You would think that your IT people would be ahead of the curve on Internet Explorer.

It should be a no brainer to have your employer install something a little more secure than IE.

56. Just to tell you how stupid the IT
person is here where I work.
I was using Firefox for DU, my personal email, etc. She took it off the computer and said "it wasn't secure enough to use at work." No kidding. So I'm back to just using straight IE here.

A few of us have had a nice chuckle about it though. I miss the tabbed browsing at work though. :(

Does Ad-Blocker work well on old 'puter with FF?
Why do I need it? FF seems to be blocking all just fine! ;)

19. Exactly, Firefox and the Adblock plugin work wonders...
Here's the link:
http://adblock.mozdev.org/

In fact I've not seen a single Google ad on DU so far. Only by looking into Adblock's "machine room" I noticed it's already busy blocking the crap :-)

Adding Google ads to Adblock's blocked items is just a matter of seconds.

53. Here is how to do it.
In case some people cannot figure it out. After you install Adblock, go to it in your Tools menu; go to "List all blockable elements". You should see some elements that contain "google". At the bottom, type "*google*" in the field. And voila, all elements containing "google" are gone from your page!

8. Big deal
They're ads. Period. It's better than having to watch a half-page ad for cigarettes or beer; or, in the case of Salon, a pushy, can't-avoid Flash ad promoting luxury items for the uppah clahss.

DU needs to make money. I'm flat broke myself, which you may be able to tell from the lack of my DU Donor star. If Google's ad program presents us with ironic ads like that, let's have a laugh at their expense, and not pour our venom out on the Admins.

It's not just expensive to run a website, it's difficult, too. Have a little gratitude!

24. depends on what sites you go to
as a web developer I can tell you that I have plenty of sites that I've built that rely on Javascript. By disabling it you might find that many sites that have more functionality than just displaying information or news (but even some of them) will not render correctly or work.

Being on dial-up, ads just further delay loading. CrooksAndLiars displays a lot of ads.
Happily, only a couple came up with Javascript off, but I have no idea about functionality of the site.

3. Once again, WE KNOW THAT THERE WILL BE ADS FOR CAUSES YOU MAY NOT WANT TO SEE. There may be some weird ads served up during this test period because they will be targeted to the topics of the threads themselves (in theory). It's possible that there will also be a disproportionate number of military ads to begin with. This is because the thread we were originally testing this on was a thread about veterans' rights. The military ads should disappear after a while.

As a reminder: we can filter ads from certain URLs but only after we see them, and it takes a few hours for the filters to take effect. So please don't start tons of threads complaining about all the ads you don't want to see. We'll take care of them as they come up.

http://journals.democraticunderground.com/EarlG/57

Oh and if you say the liars name it only promotes him, as you noticed at the top of your thread.

25. Actually, I see a great future in this, a lot of fun
When people get used to it, they'll probably compete in getting out the 'worst' ads by using keywords that triggers them.

That words like Ann Coulter triggers ads about chemical and radiological terrorism should surprise no one.

Not to mention 'Worst ad of the month' in the Lounge and so on ;-)

We could invent codes like O'Lielly instead of O'Reilly to see if it helps. I wonder if the asterisk * brings out ads about Bush yet, or do we have to wait some years?

I just question the strength of Democratic Activism when you can't even get enough activists to commit $10.00 a month to keep a message board going and free of Republican ads.

It's like the local Democratic meetings I used to go to. Everyone wants to sit-n-bitch but you can't even get more than two folks together to walk a friendly neighborhood for a Dem candidate.

52. It's about perception
I really don't want to come to Democratic Underground, a little oasis of rationality in a world of craziness, and have ads thrown in my face trying to sell me my enemies.

Look, I'm the last person who would ever try to invalidate someone else's thoughts/feelings. But, I remember way back when - when Skinner and EarlG first opened the DU doors - Skinner carried the financial load all by himself. If today, the Google ads allow DU to help pay for itself, then I'll laugh at every Coulter, O'Reilly, Fox, etc ad that shows its face here - because I know that each of those ads are not reaching their 'desired' money-making targets!

It's about perception - I choose to see that Skinner is alleviating a financial burden. I choose to see humor that skinner is taking away money from these right-wing ads.
