I Knew It - Starbucks 'bomb' was only a flashlight

When this story first came out, they had mentioened that an object that looked like a flashlight was found in the San Francisco Starbuck's bathroom. As this story dominated the news that day, I thought to myself "I bet it was just that - a flashlight and everyone is getting worked up over nothing".

Well...

http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/01/13/starbucks.no.bomb.ap/index.html

SAN FRANCISCO, California (AP) -- What authorities thought was a bomb in a Starbucks coffee shop turned out to be a flashlight casing, police said Thursday.

A forensic analysis "revealed the absence of any explosive material," a police statement said.

Police initially said the device found in the store's bathroom Monday was powerful enough to seriously injure or kill someone if it had exploded. Police evacuated about 100 people from the Starbucks and apartments above it.

A man arrested on suspicion of planting an explosive device, Ronald Schouten, was still being held Thursday on an unrelated burglary charge. But police said his explanation on how the flashlight ended up in the coffee shop was credible.

Schouten, 44, told KPIX-TV that he found the flashlight in the street and accidentally dropped it in the bathroom.

"I love that Starbucks," Schouten said in an interview with the station. "The people are saints. They know I'm homeless. They let me drink coffee for 50 cents. I love those people."

The station reported that the flashlight was filled with corroded batteries.

Nice..they arrested a homeless guy for leaving a flashlight in a starbucks bathroom.

3. Or worse . . .
An honest congressman could have used it to shed light on graff and corruption on the Hill.

12. And don't stop there jobycom. . .
The report indicated that it had corroded batteries! Corroded, for goodness sake. I mean we're talking serious injury here, to say nothing of the improper disposal of batteries. We're on the slippery slope. The question is, though, whether this is only the first of a string of dirty flashlight attacks in the US, targetting that most quintessential of American icons, Starbucks. Let's keep track of that homeless guy. He could become one of the sorts of people parents warn their children about. "Watch yourself, young man, or you could end up like Padilla, or that shoe-bomb guy, whatshisname."

It would be damn near comical if we weren't so well and truly fucked in so many other ways.

16. Yeah, sad how much truth is behind our attempts to make it humorous.
The fear was created, and can't be removed. People will remember how close it was to being a real bomb, and will vote and act and fear as though we were attacked, though there was in reality no danger at all.

Levi Strauss in action. If there is no common enemy, create one.

6. Funniest scene in Shrek 2
When the giant Gingerbread Man steps on a Starbucks, and all the customers run screaming across the street to another Starbucks.

7. Corroded batteries.
So it didn't even work. It was a broken flashlight, no doubt thrown away, because, once the batteries corrode, the whole thing is pretty much shot.

Paranoia is a wonderful thing.

11. Interestingly
I never heard the story when it came out, but I've heard that it was a flashlight many times now.

Maybe the original story didn't make it to Austin, or maybe I was doing something else the night it broke. If it was during the Rose Bowl, I wouldn't have heard if it were a nuclear bomb.
