ROVE: make Iraq a centerpiece of campaigns

http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/TheNote/story?id=156238

<snip>

"A top adviser said Rove and White House political director Sara M. Taylor are advising candidates not to duck the issue of Iraq but rather to make it a centerpiece of their campaigns."

"The Rove-Taylor view is that one-third of Americans agree with liberal Democrats calling for immediate withdrawal and another third support staying the course. The middle third wants a new strategy, but would be leery of pulling out and leaving behind a volatile Iraq, a position strategists believe leaves those voters open to persuasion."

7. For once, I hope they take Rover's advice
There is nothing the Republicans can do that will be more helpful to Democrats than centering their campaigns around Iraq.

14. They control the news about Iraq. They can make it look good,
at least through November. After that, the place could erupt like a volcano, but it will be too late.

15. one thing's for sure, they cannot win by running away from this issue.
any banana republican that tries to hide on this one is sunk, that's for sure.

they really have no choice but to try to win on this issue. if they don't they'll lose on this issue. they cannot make voters forget about iraq.

having said that, BEWARE. the banana republicans hold all the cards in this one. they can time battles for their political convenience. they can claim to have captured osama bin laden the day before the election. they can destroy an entire village and plant evidence of wmds. they can announce troop withdrawls. they can declare victory and leave.

democrats can do nothing but make speeches and propose legislation that won't make it out of committee.
