Anheuser-Busch to Buy Rolling Rock Brands
Anheuser-Busch to Buy Rolling Rock Brands for $82 Million From InBev

By JIM SALTER
The Associated Press

ST. LOUIS - Anheuser-Busch Cos. Inc., citing consumers' need for variety in beer, said Friday it will pay $82 million to purchase the Rolling Rock beer brand from InBev USA, the U.S. subsidiary of Belgian-Brazilian brewer InBev SA.

The deal will make Rolling Rock brands available to more consumers, St. Louis-based Anheuser-Busch said. The company will begin brewing Rolling Rock and Rock Green Light in August. Anheuser-Busch, maker of the top-selling beer and light beer, Budweiser and Bud Light, is the nation's largest brewer.

InBev USA, based in Norwalk, Conn., said it will sell its brewery in Latrobe, Pa., and focus its U.S. business on its imported beers, which include Stella Artois and Beck's. The company is currently in discussion with potential buyers.

1. Definitely Unimaginable to the people in Latrobe, PA
The sale has imperiled the jobs of the workers at the Latrobe brewery, which has operated for more than a century and has become a local and regional fixture.

(snip)

"They're claiming we're going to stay open two and-a-half months," said Joe Mulheren, a union steward, told Pittsburgh's WTAE-TV. "If we don't get a buyer in two and-a-half months, we'll be done July 31st."

A closure could significantly affect the local economy as the brewery is among Latrobe's top sources of real estate tax and one of its biggest buyers of water.

Ed Dobies, who has worked at the brewery for 42 years, said that "taking Rolling Rock out of Latrobe doesn't sit right with me."

2. I saw on the Nightly Business Report
that AB was buying Rolling Rock, but I was not aware that they first thing they were going to do was shut down the brewery. I'll have to buy a final case before the disaster commences. This is awful.

19. AB isn't shutting down the brewery. They didn't buy it...just the brands
and the recipes for "Rolling Rock" and "Rock Green Light".

InBev USA, based in Norwalk, Conn, retains the brewery and will either find another buyer for it, or will close the brewery.

6. BASTARDS!!! Rolling Rock is MY brand of beer. I drink it for its
its flavor, uniqueness and quirkiness. I liked it BECAUSE it wasn't a Busch or a Miller or a Coors. Of course Pennsylvania still has

17. I won't drink Rolling Rock if they close Latrobe
And I buy it fairly often too, because I like to make a "LunchBucket" with it.
1 shot of Amaretto + 1 jigger of orange juice poured into a Rolling Rock Beer. Pretty good drink.

I guess I would have to find another brand to make my Lunchbuckets, and if AB closes Latrobe, it won't be an AB brand I choose.

18. Actually, it's not AB that's closing the plant in Latrobe

In a move typical of big corporations, you have two separate deals here:

A-B is buying the brands (and the recipes) for "Rolling Rock" and "Rock Green Light", Not the Latrobe Brewery.

InBev USA, based in Norwalk, Conn, retains the brewery and will either find another buyer for it, or will close the brewery.

13. damn
that's gonna ruin a lot of good summer time memories of playin' ultimate down on the Mall, in the shadow of the Lincoln Memorial. Rocks have always been a hot summer day favorite for me, looks like I'm gonna have to find something new, the thought of a BudRock is just wrong.
