The film director, a lifelong socialist, has long been critical of Tony Blair’s Goverment.
He said: “It was an illegal war . . . It was based on lies, and resulted in the destruction of Iraq. Children have been left without parents. That continues on a daily basis.”
Loach’s Irish Civil War drama, The Wind that Shakes the Barley, is one of four British films competing for the coveted Palme d’Or prize. It will open in Britain on June 23.
He said that the story would allow audiences to draw parallels with the conflict in Iraq and the loss of civilian lives in the fight against the “oppressors”.
