CONCORD, New Hampshire (Reuters) - A senior official in U.S. President George W. Bush's re-election campaign was sentenced to 10 months in prison on Wednesday for his role in suppressing votes in a key U.S. Senate race, a scandal that Democrats charge may involve the White House.

James Tobin, 45, one of three Republican campaign operatives convicted in a phone-jamming scheme designed to keep New Hampshire Democrats from voting in a 2002 election, was convicted in December of two telephone harassment charges.

Prosecutors had asked for a two-year sentence.

1. Just another example of liberal, activist judges and prosecutors
criminalizing politics.

2. Vote tampering (especially in a presidential election) ...

... is, IMHO, a form of treason. And the prison sentence should reflect that fact.

Ten months for screwing with ANY election? Yeah, that'll send a message ...

3. Not nearly as criminal as possesion of marijuana, apparently.
Ten months, that is just an out and out insult to the injured party, the people.

8. "They" jammed phones in Ohio in 04 too.
I know, I heard it myself.

"The national Republican Party, which has paid more than $2.5 million in legal fees to defend Tobin, has said the calls to the White House were routine during a tight state Senate race and had nothing to do with the phone-jamming."

10. There must be some mistake.

Tobin is such a good Christian. His minister testified about this at his trial. He would never do somthing illegal and then lie about it later. And neither would Bush, DeLay, Santorum, or any of our other devoutly Christian leaders.

It's just our activist judges and liberal press persecuting our good leaders once again (ha ha).

11. As long as the republican party benefits this will continue.
The phone jamming scheme worked, the republicans were elected and took office. They have paid no real price in fact they have succeeded. If all candidates that benefited were disqualified then this type of campaign fraud would end. I know this is impossible but the policy that the republicans have of limiting the vote is un-American and should be exposed for what it is. Criminal and undemocratic.
