Perhaps an unfair and overly-sweeping assertion, but I couldn't help noticing how the latest Pew poll shows yet again that we
African-Americans are the group most opposed to the two key Bush policies of the day: spying on Americans without a warrant, and the war in Iraq.
In the first case, we remember government spying on MLK and Malcolm X; any spying on Americans leaves a foul taste in our mouths as a result.
In the second case, we rely in the greatest proportions on the types of programs which are not being fully funded so that billions of dollars can go to Iraq. Also, we are extraordinarly underrepresented among the entities that are benefitting and will benefit from the war.
African-Americans can be quite a conservative group,
socially, but when it comes to use of government power, we've had too much direct experience with the various types of abuse to accept anything even remotely like Bush's nonsense.
Pew didn't ask about impeachment. Maybe it's too soon. But I would have loved to see the response to a well-worded question on the topic broken out by various groups as well.
