"Are you a bigot?" would have sufficed. I've never in my life heard anyone described as a "closet bigot." It's understood that in today's politics, no one is an overt bigot.

Maybe he said it just to ratchet the rhetoric that Repubs love so well, that any accusation of "closet" implies homosexual and therefore gets the Repubs up in arms. You can bet it was deliberate on his part.
