Local LTTE: Quit complaining; act like Christians
Greg Hodur letter: Quit complaining; act like Christians

Published Thursday, January 12, 2006
For the past month I have bitten my tongue and gone out of my way to avoid inflaming our “Christian” community. I quietly have endured slights like “Oh, you’re one of those” because I dared wish someone a “Happy Holidays” instead of the Christianly-correct “Merry Christmas” and watched in amazement as many of you smugly congratulate yourselves for using the “proper” greeting like it’s the secret handshake of some oversized frat house.

Really, people, in ’06, why don’t you quit proclaiming your Christianity and, instead, start acting like Christians?

As I understand it, some of you who base your sense of moral superiority on the fact that you say the “right” things and support using the government to impose your particular religious beliefs upon the rest of us couldn’t make it to church on Christmas because it was inconvenient.

I am a card-carrying ACLU liberal lawyer and I was in church for midnight Mass on Christmas Eve with my family in Toledo, Ohio, which much to my wife’s consternation actually occurred at midnight. I don’t think that makes me superior to anyone, but I do know at least I am not a hypocrite.

How about you? Did you make it to church? If not, spare me your lectures, and resolve in ’06 to actually do what your Christ commanded, like loving your neighbors as yourself and caring most about those who are the least among us.

Merry New Year!

Greg Hodur

Christians emulate Christ? What a novel concept. But then again Christ was not a Christian himself, so I guess the first four books of the New Testament are just there to make the Bible thicker.

3. Short but to the point. :-) WWJD? Don't just "talk the talk...
Walk the walk". If Christians actually went by what Jesus said in the Bible... this world would probably be a much nicer place 8) ... OR there would be a whole lot less who call themselves "Christians" and most assuredly are NOT. :grr:

There are times when I think there needs to be a *What Would Jesus REALLY Do* "red letter Bible" campaign where folks hand out small "red letter" versions of the Gospels. Sadly too many people who consider themselves "Christians" only know what whacked out power hungry flim flam ministers like Falwell, Swaggert, Roberts, etc tell them.

10. You should read Jimmy Carters book
"Our Endangered Values." It's a great book and I'm really enjoying it. Plus, when I come across other Christians I can have good points to make about various issues from gay marriage to abortion and science. It's a great book to recommend to people.

13. Thank you. I'll add it to my wish list as well as check out the library..
to see if they have it so I can perhaps read it sooner. :-)

It sounds like it will be a book to recommend to a few of my non-Christian friends as well. Over the years I've found that "knowledge is power" and it's best to "know your enemy" (so to speak). :-)

11. Yes
Jesus stud for things that mattered. He was a liberal if you look at his actions and deeds. When people ask me why I'm a liberal I tell them why and it's because of my faith that I believe in with Jesus. He wanted women to be equal in society, caring for the elderly, children, enviornment. He, guess what, was also for seperation of church and state! "Give that which is Ceaser's unto Ceaser and that which is God's unto God."

6. I SO agree!
It used to be that the pink haired preachers on television asking for money were ridiculed by most, and were considered to be crooks that took advantage of the least educated in our society or the most vulnerable such as the elderly. Now - they seem to be running the country! How did that happen?

How is it that now, anything goes as far as behavior, even the most in your face corruption and hatred, but as long as you SAY you are a Christian, then no matter what you do, no matter how hateful you are, it is okay.

And how did the right-wing hate mongers get to be the darlings of some people claiming to be Christian?

Actually applying Christian concepts - a.k.a. Jesus's teachings, is very very difficult. It isn't easy. It's not done by simply putting a pin on your lapel or by associating with a particular group of people just to say that you belong.

Enough about Jesus! Let's get to real issues!

When a man loves another man, don't you feel threatened? You better be!
