SMILE!! BUSH, GOP CONGRESS LOSING CORE SUPPORTERS-->

Disaffection over spending and immigration have caused conservatives to take flight from President Bush and the Republican Congress at a rapid pace in recent weeks, sending Bush's approval ratings to record lows and presenting a new threat to the GOP's 12-year reign on Capitol Hill, according to White House officials, lawmakers and new polling data.

Bush and Congress have suffered a decline in support from almost every part of the conservative coalition over the past year, a trend that has accelerated with alarming implications for Bush's governing strategy.

The Gallup polling organization recorded a 13-percentage-point drop in Republican support for Bush in the past couple of weeks. These usually reliable voters are telling pollsters and lawmakers they are fed up with what they see as out-of-control spending by Washington and, more generally, an abandonment of core conservative principles.

2. Herr Goebbels, can we burn the Reichstag again?
Maybe that wouldn't even save them at this point. I hope not.

9. Reichstag fire led to Enabling Act led to Hitler as dictator...
9/11 led to Patriotic Act led to...

There was some discussion that the Nazis set the Reichstag fire themselves too.

3. Anyone named "Bush" loses in this. Jeb's prospects go down every
time his older brother stubbornly refuses to make meaningful reforms.

Poppy was abandoned by conservatives and Bill Clinton swept into the White House in 92.

Dubya is going to be the Bush family's last entry into presidential politics for a long, long time.

an ideological majority, and he still lost the conservatives.

Diebold is going to be in court soon. Problems with their little voting toys are springin up all over, and the perception grows that they can proceed only under heightened scrutiny, and only then if they're free of filed claims. Let's see what the ACLU and various other voting rights groups have to say in court. Dubya's people in Florida and Ohio -- Katherine Harris and Ken Blackwell -- are both in electoral trouble, too. Once Dubya is out of office, his sphere of influence shrinks dramatically.
