Strange number on my caller ID-area code 202
And the rest of the number was 000-0000. I tried to call it, but got a "this number cannot be completed as dialed" message. I know "202" is Washington.

Has this every happened to anyone else?

and a clarification:

Apparently, the number is a hack to cover up who's really calling, much like spammers munging e-mail addresses.

4. uh...
I just had a pretty bizarre experience. My cell phone rang, but I didn’t get to it in time. When I looked at the list of missed calls, I saw the number 202-000-0000.

Interesting point of trivia. When somebody at the White House makes an outgoing call, the caller ID shows up as 202-000-0000.

So a few minutes ago, somebody from the White House called my cell phone and didn’t leave me a message.

(Could it have been a campaign thing? Maybe. But I thought there were laws against making campaign calls from government property.)

Update: Does this make me a part of the vast Right-Wing Noise Machine? Seriously, Karl, if you’re going to call me up in the middle of the morning and not even have the courtesy to leave a message, the least you could do is put me on the payroll.

6. Someone Using VoIP and Not Transmitting a Real Number
I get some 000-000-0000 or 111-111-1111 calls, always telemarketers.
(I don't think our application for the Do Not Call List "took" when we did it).

9. This might clear things up: Republican Asking for Money...
...somehow get to use the 202-000-0000 White House number.

From the WebHosting Talk Fourm:

Disgruntled
In the last few days my caller I.D. has shown ten calls while I was out from:
202-000-0000
DIST OF COLUMBI

Has anyone gotten anything similar? If so, which teleparasite was calling?

================================

It must be pretty hush-hush, since they don't bother to leave a message. They've been doing it since March 31, which doesn't sound very urgent, but given the bureaucracy that's not necessarily a contradiction. Maybe I should ask the neighbors if they've seen any black helicopters drop by while I was out.

================================

Well, this evening the mystery was solved. In their 13th call I was actually home to answer the phone. It was the Idaho Republican Party soliciting a donation. I booted up my computer, opened my WinFax Send Log and read the supervisor the February 8, 2005 fax to the Idaho Republican Party telling them to put me on their do-not-call list. Tomorrow I'll be providing copies to the Idaho Attorney General and the liberal newsmedia. Even though I'm conservative, I play no favorites with telemarketers.
I asked if they're in District of Columbia. No.
I asked if they're in Idaho. No.
The Idaho Republican Party's call center is in Phoenix.

11. yes!
I really have! That same number! Weird. I remember because it was such an odd number. I don't have caller I.D. but I pressed *69. I did this for other reasons, and I was avoiding calls that day and just let my answering machine pick it up. I googled the area code to find out what state it was from, and decided it was just maybe a bill collector....uh, not that I owe any, cough, money. ;) Anyhow, since then I've gotten a few more calls from area code 202, but the numbers have been different. This has been in the past two months.

employees inside the White House? Why not?

14. I got two calls yesterday
from my sister. I didn't recognize the number. She was calling from her home phone but she was using a prepaid calling card. Each call showed it coming from a different number. must be that the calling card routes the call thru the cards network.that are in different area codes.

15. If you ever need this again try whitepages.com and click on
Reverse Phone. You might be able to find out info on the phone number.

16. I got a call last week from the 202 area code
I just missed it, so I did a *69 and got the whole number. I tried looking it up in a reverse directory, but couldn't get a name for it. I have a cousin who lives out there, but it wasn't her number.
