Oops Laura... Your slip is showing...

U.S. President George W. Bush waves to reporters as he with first lady Laura Bush leaves the St. John's Church in Washington May 6, 2006. President Bush attended a wedding ceremony of the family members Alexander Ellis and Sarah Aker. REUTERS/Yuri Gripas

Looks like the seamstress left the pins in Bab's skirt.

Not a care in the world.

I have no idea...

I don't think I really belong here. I just don't have it in me to be so mean. I don't like George Bush's policies or his war. But I don't think that snarky comments about his family are appropriate. I think I need to find a more moderate site.

don't let the door.....

This hideous crime family is DAILY causing the deaths of thousands of people both in the U.S. and around the world while they and their cronies are enriching themselves. Meanwhile they entertain us with pithy comments like this one from our dear Bar at the Houston astrodome,"And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this --this is working very well for them."
and you want the people on this board to play nicey nice. They. Are. Fair. Game.

I think however that by leaving you are robbing yourself of a very informative and enriching community. I was told when I joined DU it was helpful to have a thick skin. I took the advice and am very glad I did.

40. We've lost a lot of good women on DU
over discussions like this, or worse.

You need a thick skin to deal with that. Thick skin. Maybe another phrase is more appropriate - something like a willingess to bow to the omnipotent male gaze and accept our status as objectified women first, human beings second. That's what it really amounts to, more than being mean-spirited or making snarky comments about a politician's family.

I struggle with that from time to time. I wonder if I'm contributing to a site that is so accepting of misogyny that I should refuse to take part in it, refuse to endorse it by participating in it. I've been reading lately about the campaign to get some of our so-called liberal heroes to refuse to contribute to media outlets that endorse exploitation of women, and it's making me question my participation in a number of forums.

Sometimes I withdraw, as many of us do, into the feminists group of DU, which is one of the view areas where people (men and women alike) seem to get that women have no desire to be on a god-damned fashion runway every god-damned minute of every god-damned day. The size of my ass is not your f'ing business, in other words, even if I do run for office, even if I am married to someone who runs for office.

Maybe we should start a poll, and ask if the women here are comfortable with the concept that their asses are on continual display for critiques and ratings every time they walk down the street.

___ I'm fine with every person feeling entitled to comment on my ass

___ I do not accept that the size of my ass is a suitable subject for idle conversation by strangers

___ I would want to know the speaker's intent at the time of their critique of my ass before deciding if I'm comfortable with that crit being posted on an internet forum of 80,000+ people

You're thinking the last option would get the most votes?

62. We have differing views on the word "demeaning"
and whether it is best judged by the people speaking, or the people being spoken about.

You claim that whether or not something is demeaning is based on the intent of the speaker; you think the speaker (subject) controls whether or not it is demeaning.

I, on the other hand, tend to look more at the effects of the speech on the people being talked about (objects).

If a speaker claims his words are not harmful, but then the objects of the speech say it has, in fact, hurt them, who is right?

67. Spoken as a privileged male
There is a difference between self-worth and value to society.

When women are reduced to their sexual attributes, it has very real effects in the world. I'm not interested in a pity party because someone said my ass was too big or too small or too jiggly or too flat. I'm talking about a system of objectifying women, with the REAL effects being that men do not take them as seriously in the business world, in the world of politics, as community leaders in their churches, or as social equals.

When we support a SYSTEM of women feeling like they are continually on display for men's sexual fantasies, gratification, or contemplation as a potential sexual partner, it creates an atmosphere where men feel entitled to take, sometimes violently, what they view as their right. It creates a system where women make less money and have less rights over their bodies, as a result of OTHERS viewing them as less than equal.

Same as racism, yes? If you feel entitled to degrade any group of people, if that sense of entitlement is allowed to spread unchecked, the people it is aimed at experience very real effects of that attitude.

70. LOL! Don''t confuse aesthetics with objectification.
As a gay man I'm well aware of value in society - both in society in general and as a matter of sexual objectification.

Women ARE constantly on display, as are men, for a variety of reasons aside from sex. This is life in all its glory and frustration - humans have aesthetics. Go ahead and ban every reference to it, destroy every artwork - it'll still be there.

Observing that Laura Bush has her underwear hanging out the bottom of her skirt doesn't degrade any group of people.

73. Here's what I EXPECT
I EXPECT to see racism, homophobia, sexism, xenophobia and classism everywhere. There are some notable exceptions where I've been pleasantly surprised to see it's not tolerated.

If someone was demeaning to blacks - let's say commenting, as they might feel entitled to do, on why some white woman is dating a black man - and I complained about it here, would you use the same dismissive language in replying about it? If I spoke out about racism here, would you imply I was expecting DU to be a "great big support group" that people have?

I've never heard anyone addressing racism being spoken about that way, like it's an issue for personal therapy, not valid social debate.

there is a reason. What's the reason, if it's not to make them feel better about themselves in some way, to gain validation? Perhaps there is another reason I haven't thought of. I'm open to other interpretations.

Maybe you should ask THEM why they place THEIR value in the aesthetics of others, since they are the one that just asked for the compliment.

You can try to divorce humanity from aesthetics if you like. But you won't get far.

Is it nice if someone find you aesthetically pleasing? Sure. But it's just opinion, and just one opinion.

Some may choose to put value in that - it's their choice.

71. I'm a female
and the discussion about Laura and Babs doesn't bother me in the slightest. They've both had their say at different times, and when you have Babs saying things like she doesn't want to see body bags because she doesn't want to trouble her "beautiful mind" you know well ahead of time that she deserves every single comment we make about her.

As far as Laura is concerned, the woman appears to either be doped up or drunk every time a picture is taken of her. She is one of the weakest "first ladies" this country has ever seen, and she has yet to express herself without appearing to be an appendage of her husband. If she had a will of her own, or if she appeared in any way intelligent and assertive, I don't think she would be parodied as much as she is. Many of us here respect strong women, even those on the right--Nancy Reagan is one who will get more kudos than ribs, for example, and I personally have a great deal of respect for Betty Ford and even Pat Nixon.

The women who are on the right are the ones who are dishonoring their own gender, not us. Ann the Mann, Malkin, Laura, Babs, Phyllis Schafly, etc all are worthy of our best remarks, because they're all scum. If you don't agree, that's fine--we are entitled to our own opinions, if nothing else.

I don't feel as though women are mistreated here at DU. If someone feels more sensitive to some of the discussion, then they should not interpret that as a personal affront, because it isn't. I don't see misogyny because all of our wrath is aimed at the reich wing, and not at each other in that area. We derogate all the males on the right with equal ferocity and scorn, and those women on the right get as much as we give to the males.

Does it bother you when they talk about Hillary like that? Or you're okay with it?

Does it bother you that the media spends a disproportionate time talking about what women politicnas wear, while they talk about where male politicians stand on an issue?

As a woman, are you cool with that?

83. What I object to the right about
is their notion that they still control a woman's body and are "lord and master" of any and all females in their worlds.

I have found that many women in the "skin" industry are pretty liberated, and are more free in their own bodies than a lot of the rest of us. I find personally that I don't have to be beholden to any man in order to live, and I state my opinion in the real world without worrying about whether a guy finds me "cute" or "cuddly" because I hand him his balls on a platter. I never pretend to be stupid nor do I hide my brains and intelligence, either.

The right's concept that women are second class citizens irks me, but I find it loathesome that many of the women on the right are so willing to let themselves be put into a secondary role to begin with. It isn't the men, but the women on that side that define how they are treated by the men. By allowing themselves to be treated thusly, they are the ones who are condemning ALL women to be treated as less than equal human beings.

Once upon a time, we tried to pass the ERA, and we failed. We failed because not every woman in our country would support the measure, and too many were willing to let it fade away. If women stood up for other women, the inferior status in which many of us live would finally be trumped, and we would no longer be the right's favorite prey.

The right has consistently portrayed feminists as bitches, lesbians, aggreessive and yes, "Feminazis" and too many women believe in this image as one they don't want to associate with. If they only could associate their own failings with the propaganda of the male right-wing, they might see feminists as most of us really are--determined women who don't want to be treated as second class citizens, who deserve equal pay and equal standing on all levels.

As far as Hillary Clinton is concerned, Hillary has no pretensions to fall under that right-winged judgement. She has self-esteem, she is intelligent, she is a strong enough woman to see through the male intolerance on the right, and the comments from many of the assholes on the right prove it: she provokes them to call her nasty things because she won't give in to their dominating bullshit. She is courageous in this, as are many women throughout history who have rebelled against the conservative voices and sought their own place in history.

I've seen bumper stickers which read: "Women Who Behave Rarely Make History" and that in itself is an explanation to some extent of our modern world. It is the right-winged women who side with their men, who don't go out of character, who let themselves be subjugated who fade along with history. And for times further back in history, it was the men who wrote history, conveniently leaving out any contributions by women, except for those who stood out too much to be ignored.

Women who allow the opinions of men to shake their resolve, who even give a shit about what a man says to be disturbed by it, are the ones who are without self-esteem. For the past forty years, though, we have been faced with a silent uprising--a budding revolution lead by women who want to turn the world on its edge, and find our true status as equals. If we can't get to that point, women will remain powerless, and subject to all the nastiness that men throw at them to keep them inferior in some way. Even to the point of allowing ANY man to determine what a woman does with her own body is, in my eyes, a sin. But many of the young women today don't know of the struggles we endured, have never known a world without legal abortion and other choices, or all the hell we've been put through as women. They will only know if those rights are taken away from them, and then we will go through the same bullshit once again, and will continue to do, over and over again, until women are finally freed from such servitude.

As far as what fashion statements are made regarding women in general, I tend to ignore it all. Who wears what to the awards shows, or how their hair is styled, is just so much more bullshit. And that goes for politicians as well. When I see such remarks made on a news show, I pretty much realize that it's a news show I have no desire to see ever again, seeing their slant on the "news" they are relating. I've never seen those on the left (like Jon Stewart or Stephen Colbert) getting into a discussion about a woman's wardrobe, but if they did, I'm sure it was with a wink and a nod, not on a level that would demean any woman.

People who are overly concerned about the opinions of others in relation to outward appearance are the ones who need to be educated better, and the media slant of thin=beautiful needs an upgrade where commercials are not in league with the right winged version of the world. If commercials took on a realistic tone, perhaps this obsession would eventually end, and we would be able to raise kids in the new generation more free from such condemning illusions.

44. I would tend to agree.
Perhaps after another couple of years of this pResident's policies, a few thousand more dead children, possibly someone YOU know, after some of the heinous policies touch you and yours in the most personal of ways, you will differently. We, for the most part, had Parents who raised us with good manners as well, we have just been so outraged by the vileness of this regime that we have lost the veneer of civility.

72. B2G, I think you need to learn to use the hide thread option. It is what I
and others like be do when we don't care for a thread. I tend to stay out of mocking the family members of politicians because I live in a glass house. But, all websites are going to have moderates and not so moderates. I think you'll have trouble finding the perfect, non snarky site...unless you start one on your own.

Sorry to have missed you. Belated Welcome to DU...now, I guess, good bye.

77. Hi B2G
I am sorry that my post upset you. Please don't leave because of it. There is so much that is good here. So much to learn. And believe me it is the best place to get all the news.

I used to be like you. I didn't like hearing remarks about family members. Chelsea Clinton was just a child when they went after her. That is just plain wrong as far as I am concerned. However, Poppy, Laura, and *'s mom have all stood up and supported *. If Laura wasn't traveling the country supporting her husband, I wouldn't have posted the pictures like I did. It was a little "catty" (is that how to spell that? LOL) and I knew that when I posted it. But yesterday, I had also read stories like

US helicopter crashes in Afghanistan, 10 soldiers killed Sat May 6, 2:06 PM ET

KABUL (AFP) - A US helicopter involved in an anti-Taliban combat operation crashed in the mountains of eastern Afghanistan, killing all 10 US soldiers on board, the US military has said.

The crash of the Chinook in Kunar province late Friday was another blow to coalition forces in Afghanistan after a bomb killed two Italian soldiers near the capital the same day.

"The remains of 10 soldiers were on board the aircraft that crashed last night. There were no survivors," said a spokeswoman for the US-led military coalition, Lieutenant Tamara Lawrence.

Iraqis Cheer Crash, Spar With British By ROBERT H. REID, Associated Press Writer
Sat May 6, 10:10 PM ET

BAGHDAD, Iraq - A British military helicopter apparently was hit by a missile Saturday and crashed in Basra, triggering a confrontation in which jubilant Iraqis pelted British troops with stones, hurled firebombs and shouted slogans in support of a radical Shiite Muslim cleric.

I hope you stay. This is a great place to be. A great community. And a wealth of information can be found here.

35. Strange, both women are having hem line problems
Sometimes the Bush's do certain things with their cloths on purpose. Like on election night when Jenna wore the bright green shoes for the photo op.

I almost get the feeling they both did this on purpose. What the purpose is, who knows> They're both nuts, so they're hard to figure out sometimes.

Or hoping maybe, just maybe, from a window at St. Elizabeth's David Hinkley might just notice his distress.

48. I personally think Laura is a stepford wife....but... I think she is
attractive...I pay no attention to her clothes.....or her words...her choice of husbands tells me all I need to know.

The last picture of shrub and dad is odd...Shrub's hand gesture makes it look like shrub is the ventriloquist and poppy is the dummy.
