Quick tech question?
I have saved PDF files on my computer, I also have a msn space/blog space. Is there an easy way to save the PDF's on the msn space with links? So I can post the pdf's with links here for viewing?

The PDF's are important

3. Ha! ha!
I remember a redneck friend I had in college (about a hundred years ago!). Whenever I'd make some smart remark, something I guess I've always had a penchant for, he'd say "Ed, everyone likes a little ass, but no one likes a wise ass."

You are a kindred spirit! Touche!

4. Just upload them like any other file.
Assuming you can upload files to your msn/blog space, that is.

6. Just not getting any love eh ?
Ok I'll bite. But there really wasn't enough info in your OP to offer valuable input.

That being said. Answer this.

Can you upload the .pdf files to the msn space ? I assume they have given you some "quota" for pictures, files, etc. If so, there should be instructions for uploading the files.

Now if that is not possible.. then there is option 2. Its a bit more complicated so I'll wait for your answer to my first question.

8. I
have a my space account along with a msn space account, both let you upload pictures, but I can not see where you can upload PDF files. What is the more compicated way?

10. Well...
The more complicated way is running a basic web server on your pc to serve the files. However, since you can upload pictures to msn/myspace, I would think you should also be able to upload pdf files unless the "tool" for uploading is only allowing files with extensions that are associated with pictures (.jpg, .gif, etc). Does the upload tool allow you to upload .html pages as well or do they create those for you and let you "customize" them (eg color, theme, etc) - I don't use msn or my space hence why I am asking questions about "how" you do the upload. I know the web space I use (xnapster.com), the basic service is free, allows me to upload content via ftp so its really simple to make any kind of file available to the general public.

So, option 2 is to enable a personal web server on your computer with the pdf files available as served content. In this case you are bypassing msn or my space completely and serving the files to others directly directly from your pc. When you want someone to access the files, you publish the link as http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/file.pdf where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is your IP address. This address will change from time to time since I doubt you have a static one and there are bandwidth concerns.

So, if you really want to try and serve this info directly, PM me and we can go from there. Otherwise, I would continue to explore how to get those files uploaded to msn or my space. That is by far the easiest solution.

11. Thank you for your help
the 2 accounts that I have looks like they do not allow HTML/or allow only the picture uploads.

The xnapster.com that you linked does not allow much memory support, remember these are Libby Court Docs, there is a bunch already in existence and I would like to post/host the future ones.

The IP technique seems like the way to go.

Couple of questions -

1)will this make my computer more open to cyber attacks

2)If the IP address changes then will I have to change the links here at DU for people that wish to access the hosted PDF's from HTML links from here?

3)If there other questions check out then how do I find my IP address.

I hosted some documents last night on a site and they only allow so much downloading, and DU this morning already maxed them out. So the site that I was hosting the PDF's on will not let anyone see them right now.

This is an urgent situation, I appreciate your help on this matter

Thank you

Depending, I could host them for you.

15. I am not sure how to figure that out
here is the thread where the links are

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=364&topic_id=1089516&mesg_id=1089516

I hosted them on a site called streamload.com

right now the site is saying that the maximum number of downloads have been exceeded. I would like to be able to host these, future and past PDF's from Libby's case on continuing basis like here in the DU Research Forum

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=358x3589

So I need a place that can host these as cheap as possible and also where I won't run into this download problem that I currently have, because the link in the DU Research Forum will become a hub for Plame Buffs/Researchers.

Thank you again for your help -

here and if they start charging at 100 mbs downloaded a month, I think we're safe. :)
I'll pm you my email address.

17. I started out with the freeby last but ended up switching up to the
$4.95 that is how important this is - did you try to click on one of the exhibits? it comes back with an error saying too many downloads in the past hour.

18. Yeah, I think it's a slightly shady technique to lure people in.
If 1 pdf is 2 megabytes, you're screwed if 50 people download it in 1 month. That makes the 25gigs of space somewhat worthless, imo.

19. No problem, here is more info and some reference material.
If you are going to host these on your local computer, then I would strongly suggest using a service like dynamic dns http://www.dyndns.com/services/dns/dyndns/ You are correct, if the ip address changes and you have posted a link here, those links will become invalid. Thats exactly what DDNS is all about. You get a static domain name and it re-aliases as your local ip addr changes. It was created for just this sort of thing.
You can view your local connection information from a cmd prompt by typing ipconfig/all

As for security of your computer. The short answer is yes, you will become slightly more vulnerable than if you were not doing this. That being said, you will only need to open port 80 on your firewall to allow inbound traffic to access your web server on that port and be sure to keep your system patched.

Here is a page on getting IIS running if needed. In the event you do not have XP Pro, there are several other non-microsoft web servers available that are up to this job.

So bottom line, its pretty straight forward... but not "simple" unless you do this kind of thing for a living.
1) Get a web server running and verify you can access your documents locally (see link above)
2) Open port 80 on your firewall and have someone else remotely verify they can access your document using your current IP address.
3) Register with Dydns to obtain a static name and have someone verify they can access the documents via you new permanent static name.

Ok that should keep you busy for the rest of the day. ;) Let me know if you hit any snags

20. Thank you
my computer is already open with no firewalls, it has to be for work so the port 80 thing is moot, the site that you linked will host my PDF's for free?

I have been all over the internet to streamload.com, megaupload.com, box.net and all of these have some kind of catch. like not enough space, downloadable gigs, not being able to host for free.

Before I get into this site - It should let me host as many PDF's at of any size for any amount of time for any amount of downloads? Correct - cause the links I put at streamload this morning get hammered and now DU'ers can not access the files.

Lastly these files are saved on my desk top - I have no site to support them - so this link you gave me will act as a host/server for me?

Thank you for your time and patience

21. Yes its a pain the first time...

Which site ? xnapster.com ? I get 200MB of storage space and 5GB Transfer. I used it from my CD promo which included many mp3's for people to download. I pay them something like $9.99/mo every 6 months which removed all the "banner ads" that were part of the "free" site and increased my available storage & bandwidth as well. I set that site up in 2002 so its been a while. I was just looking at their rate and it looks like you should get something around 12MB and .5GB transfer for the "free" option. To remove banners from that is $1.99/mo.

I would go ahead and sign up for their free site and at least get some of the more important documents uploaded. Up to what ever max they allow for the free version. They have some tools to make it easy to configure your web page and link your files and the upload is a basic FTP transfer. As an estimate, if each pdf is 2M that would allow you to upload 6 files and have them downloaded approx 250 times. Its not much.. but that is about what you can expect for "free".

That will get you up and running the fastest, and then if you are not interested in upgrading like I did, at least you will have time to work on another solution. This certainly would be my first choice if you have never setup a web server.

oh AND GET A FIREWALL (& anti-virus software if you dont have that either) installed on your computer. What are you thinking ? While your at it, go to the microsoft site and make sure you have all the latest security patches installed.

9. You have many pdf files posted in DU research forum
Are these the same PDF files that you need to post on the web?

I don't know how to do this, just curious why you need two places if these are the same pdf files.
