More about the Spanish Star Spangled Banner
FACT CHECK: U.S. Government Commissioned Spanish-Language ‘Star-Spangled Banner’ in 1919

The right wing is up in arms over a new version of the Star-Spangled Banner written in Spanish. Last week President Bush stated that “the national anthem ought to be sung in English.” Yesterday Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) introduced a resolution requiring the Star-Spangled banner to be sung only in English:

...............

In his press release, Alexander said the Star-Spangled Banner has “never before…been rendered in another language.”

But in 1919, the U.S. Bureau of Education commissioned a Spanish-language version of “The Star Spangled Banner.” The State Department’s website also features four-separate versions of the anthem in Spanish.

It appears xenophobia isn’t part of the American tradition.

and
From Kevin Phillips' American Dynasty:

But in his book American Dynasty, Kevin Phillips notes that during Bush’s first presidential campaign, he would often sing the national anthem in Spanish. From pg. 142:

When visiting cities like Chicago, Milwaukee or Philadelphia in pivotal states he would drop in at Hispanic festivals and parites, sometimes joining in singing "The Star-Spangled Banner" in Spanish, sometimes partying with a "Viva Bush" mariachi band flown in from Texas.

1. "conservatives" would have to edumucate themselves
for acceptance. We are going to Kansas next week to spend Mother's Day with my Mother in Law; north of Topeka. I'll be feeding on the Topeka and Kansas City Newspapers.

6. Welcome to Kansas
Our paper here in KC used to be good, but it has gone way downhill. I don't know much about the Topeka paper.

8. I'm a newspaper
geek. Whenever we travel I buy every paper available. I dabbled in Journalism in my early years and I like to look at layout and editorial content and how they cover local stories. I love my dear mother-n-law and her little town is a joy to visit. All of her children except for my wife are republican. My MIL is an ass kicking democrat, always has been. My father in law who died two years ago was a dyed in the wool democrat. He was a WWII vet and a county elected official and enjoyed crossing swords with the local republicans. I can't repeat the words he had for Bob Dole. We are looking forward to our visit.

10. I do that too!
And man, have I found some crummy newspapers in this country.

On Sunday, here was the sub headline for a front page article in the Tampa paper:

Kennedy was shot and Reagan was attacked

Gee, no bias there. LOL

4. Wasn't that everyone's first thought?
Who is actually singing it now? In any language, it's strained neck muscles and squeaks, and getting the words wrong is par for the course.

9. When you outlaw singing the anthem in Spanish
Only outlaws will sing the anthem in Spanish... or sumpin'.

That will be one law I will constantly break just to be a dick... I really hate people trying to legislate how I can say things and in what language.
