DU'ers...give yourself some credit. Colbert doesn't have bigger balls
(if you are a woman, substitute ovaries) than all of you! You are the real heros! You are the politically active Americans! Take that energy this year and turn the House and Senate!

Colbert is a very talented guy, that's for sure. Is he a Democrat? I've never heard him say, but I suspect he is. Either that or fiercely independent. But I digress, that is beside the point...

Who among us here at DU if not given the same opportunity would have hesitated one second to lambaste Bush and the the Bush enablers? Granted, we probably would not have done with such talent, but we surely would have had the balls (or ovaries) to try!

So, c'mon DU. Colbert is a great talent, and probably a great guy, but YOU are the real heros. And honestly, I think all of this Colbert worship (great as it was) is starting to get a little silly.

6. As you can all too well see, the cloaking device NASA has
come up with makes the shuttle look like a farm animal.... less flack from the enviros I imagine... I mean, how much damage could a flying ass do?? A nicer touch would be if they could have made it appear as if there were flying monkeys in the contrail/exhaust.

2. Stephen Colbert is a demi-god
He sits at the noodle-tipped feet of the Flying Spaghetti Monster!

8. I thought he'd be in the Melnibone mythos...
...but that was removed from the first edition for copyright reasons. What, you weren't talking about Advanced Dungeons & Dragons?

5. No, give credit where credit is due - Cobert Rocks!
No, today Cobert's got the biggest balls of us all!

I don't know if I could have remained so cool and in character with "Dear Leader" only 10 feet away.

Cobert Rules! I'm in awe of him and the real journalist, our dear Helen Thomas. :woohoo:

7. From Entertainment Weekly
Are you a Democrat?

Listen, it's a secret ballot. Yeah, I'm a Democrat. I'm not asking anybody to vote for Democrats or Republicans. I say everyone should vote for both candidates—except me. Just let me vote for Kerry. Then we'll be fine.

9. Again, I can agree with you...
Edited on Mon May-01-06 08:21 PM by KAZ
... but the "Colbert Factor" is becoming somewhat of of a Litmus test, and I can agree with that too, to a certain extent. He seemed to do what so many of us wished we could do, if presented with the same situation. He told off that stupid MFing chimp to his face, in front of 2800 people, and on TV. Something for which we will all measure ourselves.

Edit: And I agree with your appraisal of DUer's. I hope they take comfort in your praise.

10. What is it
that bothers you that we are getting such a kick out of it? All of us would like to think we'd do what he did but most of us won't get the chance so it doesn't matter. Colbert took the chance and he did it. Most people in his position would not do that (even if we would) because it's not how the game is played. He breached etiquette.

You had your 2 weeks from now most here will have mostly forgotten about Colbert thread and now this and I don't know if I missed more. A lot of us are relishing what we saw and there is not a lot to relish these days.

12. Well, here are the facts as I see them.
Edited on Mon May-01-06 08:52 PM by Clarkie1
1. Having a good time and "relishing the moment" is a good thing.

2. There has certainly been a lot of relishing the past 48 hours of the event

3. Colbert was hired by C-Span do do his comedy routine.

4. What he did was nothing significantly different that what I have learned he does on his daily show (no criticism here, just pointing out he didn't make a radical departure of his usual "self")

5. He's not the first to have "breached etiquette" at this sort of event. To be honest, I'm not sure any etiquette was breached. A lot of the people in the audience seemed to really be enjoying what he was saying. Others of course looked uncomfortable (I remember a particular shot of some woman from FOX news). But then again, it's my understanding that at this kind of event some of that is to be expected (didn't Imus "breach etiquette" with Clinton at one of these kinds of roasts?). In this case of course it did go a little farther than that because of the current state of affairs and the nature of Colbert's style.

Anyway, I think I'm done posting on the good Mr. Colbert...It was a good laugh and I look forward to more good laughs from the guy in the future. We can all use one now and then. Perhaps he reminded all of us that Bush is nothing special, and he can be ridiculed like anyone else.

I guess I just didn't think most DU'ers ever believed anything otherwise. Perhaps the psyche of Democrats was/is in even worse shape than I thought. If Colbert gave some a little more confidence by pulling G.W. off his little imaginary pedestal for an evening, great.

11. I had thought something similar.
Colbert was just doing the same thing that many here do. It's just he had a great captive audience of the perpetrators.
