The 'christian' Right's mantra of 'religious freedom' based off of peyote?
I have noticed something weird here.

Several Native American Tribes use Peyote in a spiritual ritual.

But, you can't do that.

In the early 90's, Native Americans said their Religious Freedom was assaulted because they weren't allowed to use peyote.

Jump ahead just a couple of years and we see the 'christian' Right complaining that their religious freedom has been violated by those "mean old Liberals".

There are some things that we need to look at that we see happening with what the Native Americans did and what the 'christian' Right is doing.

1. They claimed religious freedoms have been violated

2. They wanted Congress to pass legislation

3. It happened in sequence, first the Native Americans feel as though their freedoms are threatened, and then the 'christian' Right claims it after that... It's almost as though the 'christian' Right is doing some plagiarism.

BTW, I am for drug legalization. I don't think what the Native Americans are doing is hurting anybody, BUT, what the 'christian' Right is doing is a whole other story.

1. collective projection is a common tactic used by the right
that is, they will take what they are doing and project it onto another group (e.g. 'Liberals'), all the while complaining that this group they have targeted is somehow infringing on their rights.

It's a cyclic logic loop grand enough to make your head spin.

2. A little peyote might help the Christian right
They should try it.

I will support their religious freedom to take peyote.

I do not support their whining about persecution, etc., when you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a fundamentalist church or preacher, at least in my part of the country.

3. The same goes for Taxes
the wingnuts are always crying around about taxation and supporting cuts for the wealthiest individuals and corporations. Then they turn around and demand that native americans pay more and more taxes. If you look at their positions on indigenous peoples, you will find so many instances of double standards and hypocrisy.

4. I don't think the peyote was legalized
I have friends in the American Indian Church, and the last time I heard, peyote was still illegal. If you want to talk about religious persecution, however, the Christian right should look at the Native American religion. Even inipi ceremonies were illegal until the 1970s, and Natives were often pressured into become Christians. This is according to my Native friends with whom I do inipi ceremonies.
