European Union report details secret CIA activities since 2001

BRUSSELS, Belgium -- The CIA has conducted more than 1,000 clandestine flights in Europe since 2001, and some of them secretly took terrorism suspects to nations where they could face torture, European Union lawmakers said in a report Wednesday.

"The committee deplores the fact that, as established during the committee's investigation, the CIA has used aircraft registered under fictitious company names or with private companies to secretly transfer terror suspects to other countries including Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Afghanistan," the report said.

The investigation, by a special committee of the European Parliament, is one of several under way into the CIA's program to fight terrorism after the 9/11 attacks.

"It seems difficult to imagine that the authorities of the countries where all of this was going on were not at all informed," said Claudio Fava, an Italian member of the European Parliament who wrote the report.
