Paul Vallely is a Fox News military analyst. In an apparent attempt to "swiftboat" Joseph Wilson, he has recently (November 2005) claimed that Wilson disclosed Valerie Plame's CIA employment to him in 2002. Wilson denies the claim.

Background

Vallely's Swiftboating of Joe Wilson

Hesiod Alert - November 10, 2005

http://www.rushlimbaugh.com/home/daily/site_110905/content/rush_is_right_2.guest.html

I hate to say I warned people, but I warned you!

This is exactly how the Swift Boat assholes started out.

I guarantee that within a mojth, Gen. Vallely will be all over the networks, and cable news stations peddling his bullshit about Joe Wilson.

Simply posting about it once or twice isn't going to cut it. We need to be on this vigilantly.

Media Matters - Two years into leak investigation, Gen. Vallely suddenly claims, in contradictory statements, that Wilson revealed Plame's identity to him

Nearly two years after the start of special counsel Patrick J. Fitzgerald's investigation into the alleged leak of CIA operative Valerie Plame's identity, ret. Maj. Gen. Paul E. Vallely has recently claimed publicly that Plame's husband, former ambassador Joseph C. Wilson IV, disclosed her CIA employment in 2002 -- long before syndicated columnist Robert D. Novak outed Plame in his July 14, 2003, column. But Vallely, a Fox News military analyst and chairman of the Military Committee at the Center for Security Policy, has made contradictory statements regarding when and how many times Wilson supposedly mentioned Plame's employment. Vallely initially claimed that Wilson revealed his wife's CIA employment over the course of at least three conversations beginning in spring 2002, but Vallely changed this story days later, saying that Wilson told him about Plame's work only once in the summer or fall of that year.

A timeline of Vallely's evolving claims:

November 5: "at least three, possibly five, conversations" beginning in "the spring of 2002"

According to a November 5 article published by the right-wing news website WorldNetDaily, Vallely claimed on the November 3 broadcast of ABC Radio Networks' The John Batchelor Show that Wilson revealed Plame's CIA employment in a conversation with Vallely in a Fox News "green room" in 2002. WorldNetDaily reported that after his appearance on Batchelor's show, "Vallely told WorldNetDaily that Wilson mentioned Plame's status as a CIA employee over the course of at least three, possibly five, conversations in 2002" and that "Vallely says, according to his recollection, Wilson mentioned his wife's job in the spring of 2002":

TPM Cafe - Trying to Smear Joe Wilson (Again)

By Larry Johnson

There they go again. Rightwing hacks making up facts. The latest comes from retired Generals and Fox News Contributors Paul Vallely and Tom McInerney who went on John Batchelor's radio show and claimed:

"that Joe Wilson more than once in 2002 in the green room at Fox New Channel in Washington D.C. boasted about his wife the "CIA desk officer." McInerney has the same memory and more, since both he and Vallely were on FNC between 150 and 200 times in 2002 each..."
Well boys and girls, I too was a Fox News Contributor in 2002 and spent a lot of time in the Green Room with both Vallely and McInerney. I saw them but never saw Joe Wilson. What is really curious is that I know I spent more time with Vallely and McInerney than Joe Wilson ever did and the subject of my wife (or their wives) never came up.

I first met Joe Wilson in the Spring of 2003 and he did not mention his wife.

Wilson's Response

The One Republic - Lawsuit Threatened Over Wilson Affair

by Cliff Kincaid (11/10/05)

Did Joseph Wilson expose his own wife as a CIA employee months before columnist Robert Novak published that information? Fox News military analyst and retired Major General Paul E. Vallely is being threatened with a lawsuit for saying that the answer is yes, and that he was there when Wilson confirmed her CIA status.

What’s more, Vallely tells Accuracy in Media that he is prepared if necessary to go to court to prove it.

He may have to. Wilson's attorney, Christopher Wolf, categorically rejects Vallely's claim. He tells AIM, "It never happened I can assure you that. Vallely is making it up for whatever reason. It's false. It's libelous. It shouldn't be said. And that should be the end of it." Wolf, a partner at Proskauer Rose, is a specialist in the areas of the First Amendment, defamation and libel.
