Post your words and phrases here.
The idea comes from posts #22,23 and 24 in this thread. http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=341&topic_id=3765&mesg_id=3765

If you think this might be a good idea then lets get started. Education is the key. :hi:

1. I don't like the word "nag"
Go to Google and type: nag, definition.

This is what you get:

Web definitions for nag
bother persistently with trivial complaints; "She nags her husband all day long"
wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn

nag - definition by dict.die.net
Definition: nag. Search dictionary for. Source: WordNet (r) 1.7 nag n 1:
someone (especially a woman) who annoys people by constantly finding fault dict.die.net/nag/ - 6k - Cached - Similar pages

I get so sick and tired of hearing that women nag - when they are:

1- merely voicing their concerns about something

2 - being forced to repeat themselves because someone else has tuned them out. ("what was that you said?" "huh?" "what?" )

3 - Or because the person hearing the complaint doesn't like what is being said to them.

3. Some "nag" because the partner is not holding up his/her end of
the workload bargain. This creates a double whammy--not only does the woman do most of the work, she is also blamed (or worse) for saying unpleasant things in an effort to equalize things.

Passive aggressive or lazy partners are often the causes of "nagging."

5. That's a fabulous article
Thanks for posting it. It ought to be required reading (call it "penance") for every jerk on DU who uses a sexist term. Frankly, tho I'm pleased with the IMPROVEMENT in Admin's attitudes about such things, it ought to be required reading for them too.

6. I'm glad you liked the article. I'm looking for a study done years ago
that list many terms and phrases used to marginalize women. It was in MS magazine many many years ago. If I find it, I'll post.

8. Was it a 1973 study by Julia Stanley?
Edited on Thu Jul-28-05 05:22 PM by chicaloca
It's mentioned in a study here (the entire brief document is well worth reading, BTW):

http://geoffbarton.co.uk/files/student-resources/A%20Level/Gender/Dale%20Spender%20Summary.doc

It's also mentioned here:

Shirley Russell argues that insulting is a means of control. She quotes Julia Stanley, who claims that in a large lexicon of terms for males, 26 are non-standard nouns that denote promiscuous men. Some have approving connotation (stallion, stud). In a smaller list of nouns for women are 220 which denote promiscuity (e.g. slut, scrubber, tart). All have disapproving connotation. Equally terms denoting abstinence - like the noun phrase tight bitch - are disapproving. In Losing Out Professor Sue Lees argues that men control female behaviour by use of such terms, especially slag. Note that today both dog and bitch are used pejoratively of women. Dog denotes physical unattractiveness, while bitch denotes a fault of character.

(And yes, I realize there are some dumbshits cited in this document who say women talk more than men, or are saying that a lot of people believe women talk more than men, and no, I don't agree that women talk more than men. I'm just providing this as a jumping-off point for research.)

7. Cool article
Nothing surprising there but it's a helpful response to the "It's just words, what's the big deal?" crowd.

I've been in male-dominated work situations for the past 18 years and disrespectful references to women are so frequent you almost don't notice them. But they really do have an impact on people's attitudes and behavior.
