I have a particular sensitivity to gun rights issues (watching your 8-year-old brother nearly bleed to death because your father is an idiot who stores loaded weapons in a coat closet will do that to you), and I just can't take it. Mr. Laurel gets into the occasional flame-war on gun issues, though. I'll tell him to look for you in there.

I know a couple of male nurses who, during their community services clinicals went to a gun range and promoted gun safety, designed nice program really locks, lock boxes were to get info-- whatever. They were well recieved and I'm pretty darn sure their gender had a wee bit to do with it.

I go through periods. This week, I'm just laughing at them.

2,400,000 people used firearms to defend themselves. Most of them believe a death would or could have resulted if they hadn't.

Think about that one a minute.

How come it's only people with guns who encounter life-threatening situations??

Surely way more people who did *not* have guns must have run into similar things, given that at any moment of the day there are actually way, way more people who don't have pistols in their pockets than there are who do. Surely bad guys don't just pick on people with guns. So surely all the people without guns are ... dead.


I would be so very pleased if anybody wanted to join in the gun dungeon games ever. It is a little lonely!

The thing is that you have to be very careful what you decide to talk about. I took it very slowly there, starting several years ago. I'm not a gunhead. I don't give a crap about the things that they get hot about, gunwise. I don't need to know the calibre of a firearm to know a lot of women are murdered by their intimate partners by firearm, and that murders like that are impulsive and opportunistic and would not likely occur if firearms were not present, and that abused women are often controlled by men who use the presence of firearms in the home for that purpose, etc. etc. But I do have to have the research to back all that up if I say it.

The issue is interesting from a theoretical sort of standpoint, too. An individual right is in issue. (Regardless of that tired old second amendment: an individual right to own/do something, just the same as the individual right to possess/eat pizza.) The legal theory and practice of interferences in rights is the same no matter what the right.

Of course, in that regard, the most fun is when they say (as they do on at least a weekly basis) that they're pro-choice -- pro-choice on abortion, and pro-choice of firearms ownership. Some of them actually seem to think they are saying something meaningful and intellectually honest.

"Gun rights" militants are racist, misogynist, right-wing assholes. They have been since Spiro Agnew defeated George P Mahoney for the job of Governor of Massachusetts in 1966, Mahoney's campaign slogan having been "Your home is your castle - defend it!" (and everybody knowing whom he was talking about: the fight was over civil rights in housing, but included a measure of "gun rights" talk).

The Agnew-Mahoney contest was also noteworthy for how far Democrats can push the envelope of moving to the right without losing to a moderate Republican. Gun dungeon denizens are fond of asserting that the Democratic Party should eliminate its gun control planks, because the rest of you liberals will just vote for it anyhow ...

5. Lots of makeup application.
6. Girdles for beer bellies.
7. Salads for all 3 daily meals...lo-cal dressing
8. Ob-Gyn exams as well as lessons in female genitalia
9. Love-making lessons.
10. Miss Manners visits for a 3 hour seminar on how to behave like Cary Grant.
11. Must watch minimum of 3 Cary Grant movies.
12. Must sit with legs together or crossed at all times.

And whatever you do, purveyor of women's magazines, For God's sakes never never say the word "feminist" Or even think it. Automatic loss of sexy right there.

Take the kids to soccer. Make play dates. Live in fear. Reinforce every socialized gender role you can for your sons, because Gay friendly is so in, but remember ladies it's YOUR fault. All of it.

Oleg Volk, the artiste responsible for that gem, got bounced from DU some time ago. He is a "libertarian" of the non-left variety. One of his on-line galleries that I was particularly fond of is now no longer open to the public, evidently because of my valiant efforts to publicize it. My particular favourite was the photo of a woman's torso with a wrench lovingly clasping one of her nipples.

Ah, those women are exercising freedom of choice, you see. And I'm just an old crone who really really wants women to be vulnerable to violence at the hands of men because I think firearms possession should be regulated and the carrying of firearms in public should be prohibited.

Don't you know that if women were armed, they would not be victims of violence at the hands of intimate partners or acquaintances or the bogeymen lurking in the shadows?

No more murder-suicides by controlling men. No more date rape. No more women assaulted and killed on the campuses and jogging paths of the nation.

Never mind, for starters, that there are obviously firearms in many of the homes where where women are abused and killed already. Not to even get into the dynamics of spousal violence and acquaintance rape, and how if women were likely to use firearms to defend themselves they wouldn't likely be in the situation to start with or by that point ...
