Any thyroid/metabolic syndrome peeps here? Got a question
Hi all--first post in this group as I keep forgetting it's here! :hi:

I'm hypothyroid and have metabolic syndrome. I gained quite a few pounds last year, eating "normally", so my doctor told me I should go back on the metabolic syndrome/no carb diet that I used a number of years ago with a good deal of success. No problem; after having gained this much weight, I'm motivated and I will not be tempted by a piece of bread or a donut! x(

My question is this: I know I'm not supposed to do caffeine on this diet, but I cannot live without my morning dose, and my main problem is I can't drink my coffee black. So what's worse--using regular (organic) milk, or using nondairy creamer with all that soy? I know soy is deadly for my thyroid, but I'm not supposed to have milk on this diet. What's your vote--what would be less harmful to this type of diet? Thanks! :hi:

1. I'm not sure if this would be appropriate or not
for your situation, but have you tried coconut milk? The calories in the plain are fairly low (especially if you're just using it in your coffee) and it looks like the carbs are fairly low.

I've tried it before and it tastes pretty good. I can only find it in one grocery store around here and it's usually in the organic section.

2. I was thinking about it
I use it in smoothies and was wondering how it would work in coffee. Yep, low-cal, low-carb, which is good, even if it's a little high in fat. I know that rice milk and almond milk don't work for me because they're a little thin--I need more of a diluter! :D

3. I switched to tea
I still get the caffeine hit and can drink more during the day.

The problem with coffee (which I love) is that along with the caffeine you get an overdose of cortisol, you know the (store my fat!) hormone. So one way to look at coffee drinkers is to see them as people who dose themselves with cortisol all day. No, it's not a good image.

Tea will give a smaller dose of caffeine, but without the cortisol hit. (I think that's why they ask us not to use coffee or tea while on a low carb diet.)

Oh, and going caffeine free for a while is not that hard. You will feel it for a couple of days, but after about 3-4 days, you will find your natural rhythm. I started sleeping better too. I would even exercise (!) in the morning as a wake up. Feels great. :D

4. In the immortal words of Carrie Fisher
"Ohhh...you're right, you're right, I know you're right." :D

I do like tea...but I loves me mah coffee. My body also hangs on to cortisol like crazy, so I SHOULD give up coffee. I may try. But not today. ;)

5. Have you tried almond milk?
I use Almond Breeze. It's non-dairy and I think it's delicious.

7. I tried it
thinking I might have something to eat hot cereal with in the winter.

I got the unsweetened version, but it doesn't have much taste at all to me. Even the coconut flavor has been extracted somehow.

I think I like Almond breeze better.
