I used to have a good five figure brokerage account, but the 00s have brought me several layoffs and an empty brokerage account. Merrill Lynch and I are about to part ways.

Who is a good alternative who deserves my business? I will be starting from scratch, alas.

1. If you're looking for a full service brokerage.....
check out Stifel Nicolaus;

A smaller firm, to be sure but one which still appreciates the smaller investor.

Likewise Raymond James;
