This is an article in today's (UK) Daily Mail describing a breakthrough in the treatment of type of type 1 diabetes. I think they expect to make further progress on it:

What a comical-sounding concluding sentence! It doesn't mean that people with private health cover would be denied the free treatment. Those durned death panels!

And I am not shocked this is happening in the UK

Believe it or not I heard first of these experiments from one of my EMT instructors in the antediluvian period. She was a nurse and a Type I and emphasized those experiments during our practicum explaining that science moves on and that we needed to keep up.

I am proof positive that they will try this for Type II perhaps when I am dead and buried. Mostly the mechanism works different.
