124. it's an amazing lose-lose for him
if he backs down and doesn't veto, he loses face. If he does veto, he loses even bigger. How'd he end up in this corner? And none of this has anything to do with how dangerous it factually is to have a foreign company running the port while the US handles security; it's the perception of the situation that's gonna kill him. For years and years, the Bush/Rove mantra has apparently been that they create their own reality via PR and I've always thought that real reality was gonna come up and bite them in the ass eventually. Well, we've seen a lot of ass-biting with the Iraq war and the economy and such, but here's this port thing that sounds like the danger could be more myth than fact and it's biting him big time. President, meet petard.

The only quarters I liked were the winter ones when we had to do stuff indoors, so we got to do fun stuff like bowling, crab soccer, & square dancing. The only outdoor activity I liked was archery, but that was only offered in junior high.

82. I subbed in a PE class today
They had the kids do an obstacle course. It was laid out so that the kids moved like blood through the circulatory system. They went through the right atrium and ventricle, and then through the pulmonary artery to the lungs where they picked up oxygen and turned red. Then they moved into the left atrium and ventricle out the aorta and through the body. The kids went through obstacles that represented the valves, and tunnels for the vessels. They loved it, and developed a better understanding of the circulatory system. They also developed a better understanding of the benefits of exercise and fitness. I was very impressed.

I subbed in PE once when I was in college. One of the boys coaches came over & started ragging me about not being interested in sports & what-all (hey, asshole, I'm a SUB, I don't have to be interested in sports for this job), then told his players to stop "acting & crying like girls." :grr: Then he wondered why I turned him down flat when he asked me out (it was a Friday).
What an idiot!

126. LOL, I had to take a year of PE in college for NO credit :-(
but they sorted us all out by ability during freshman week. I ended up in the klutz class and we had fun because we did a wide variety of sporty things over the course of the year. For everyone in the class there were one or two things where you did really well and one or two where you were awful and a whole bunch of stuff in the middle and since everyone was at about the same level of ability, the team sports worked out well. About the only thing that sucked was archery because we did it during monsoon season and you had to wade through water to get your arrows out of the targets. We simply stopped wearing shoes to class. ;-) The kids in the jock classes did fewer sports for longer periods and seemed a little envious that they got stuck with jogging for six weeks while we were a variety of stuff.

113. I disagree with Evan Kohlmann
Edited on Wed Feb-22-06 01:16 AM by Patsy Stone
I don't think it's okay. I have a problem with a state-run corporation, from any other country, running port security. I don't see why it's so cost ineffective to have Americans do it. Don't we have an unemployment problem in this country?

The fact that it's all wrapped up in he BFEE is a problem. The fact that the UAE has so many ties to terrorism is a problem. The fact that NOW he's gonna veto something, and it's something that looks this bad is a problem.

What a maroon. When I agree with Frist, something's very, very wrong.

Floaties for Craig :loveya:. Floaties for KO for marking 45 days from now on his calendar to "revisit the issue". :loveya:

No floaties for Evan, in need of a comb as usual, due to excessive use of the word "canard". He nust have said it at least three more times than necessary in that interview.

Kudos to the caption dept. for "#5 Political Petard". :loveya:

I also loved when KO said that they were looking all day for a Repub to say * was right and "we got nothin'"!

123. His face was also crying out
for a razor. Dude, didn't you get the memo that "grunge" is out?

I don't agree with him, either. It is NOT okay for a country with ties to terrorism to be in charge of our ports. Sure, Chertoff is out there saying the deal is ok & assurances have been made, but why should I trust Chertoff & the others who screwed up so horrifically on Katrina (and are STILl screwing up, but that's another show)? And yes, I have a problem in that a British company was running our ports beforehand. As we are constantly reminded ad infinitum by the neocons (but only when it suits their purposes), things are different now in this post-9/11 world. Nothing has been done to beef up security at our ports or to check the cargo coming into this country, and until that is done, no foreign-owned company should be given any amount of control over our ports!

127. I thought that Evan's point
was that the company does not handle security. It handles the paperwork and the people that move containers around and someone else is supposed to handle security. The true problem is that no one is handling the security because the vast majority of containers go unchecked. I'd hoped we'd get a more obvious answer to, "So, if these guys aren't doing security, exactly what are they doing?" but it's still fuzzy. It sounds like they can tip someone suspicious off to security (duh) but they are not in charge of security.

So, Mr. Bush, Mr. Frist, when are we going to do something real about port security? Before or after the next terror attack?

And along with the shave, could Evan do something about that hair? It's like a dust mop died on his head or something.

I just read the transcript. And you're correct on your other points too -- a big part of the issue is that no one knows what they'll be doing.

I should have said port operations, not port security. Thanks for making me revisit this. Not that I feel any more secure, but at least I'm getting the facts straight. With this administration, that's over half the battle.
