Officially no Countdown tonight
Edited on Thu Apr-28-05 01:27 PM by Patsy Stone
per the Newsletter. :(

------------------------------------------------------

No Countdown tonight folks, due to the Presidential News Conference at 8:30 pm et.

MSNBC will have great coverage, however, both before and after the President.

Here's some of what's happening in the world today.

President Bush is ready to begin talking with Congress and the public about specific steps he supports to ensure the future of Social Security and will announce his ideas during a prime-time news conference Thursday. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7659512/

Iraq failed to name an oil minister for its new government on Thursday and controversial politician Ahmad Chalabi was appointed acting minister of an industry plagued by sabotage attacks and uncertainty. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7666574/

Iraq's interim National Assembly approved a Cabinet lineup on Thursday after nearly three months of political wrangling, laying the groundwork for the first elected government since Saddam Hussein's ouster to take power soon. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7629770/

An Army sergeant convicted of murdering two officers in a grenade attack on his comrades in Kuwait quietly said he was sorry Thursday before a military prosecutor urged the jury to sentence the soldier to death because he was an ideologically driven killer. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7667169/

House and Senate Republican leaders have reached tentative agreement on a budget that envisions $10 billion in Medicaid savings over the next five years and at least $70 billion in tax cuts, congressional officials said Thursday. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7667085/

Buffeted by rising energy prices and weakened consumer and business spending, the economy grew at an annual rate of just 3.1 percent in the first quarter. The slowest pace of expansion since in two years was evidence of a new "soft patch." http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7665920/

State leaders in Oklahoma say methamphetamine was ripping the heart out of their state a few years ago. It was costing billions in law enforcement, prevention, and treatment, and was by some accounts, the biggest crime problem in the state. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7666519/

A South African farmer and one of his employees were found guilty of murder Thursday for attacking a farm worker with machetes and throwing him into a lion enclosure, bringing to climax a case that rattled a country long accustomed to violence and crime. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7667346/

A 32-year-old woman disappeared just days before she was to be married, and authorities said Thursday they were expanding their search for her. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7665482/

Michael Jackson's defense on Thursday asked the judge in his child molestation trial to strike the testimony of ex-wife Deborah Rowe but did not reveal the reason in open court. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7668072/

Not all Salem residents like the idea of a statue honoring the star of the TV show "Bewitched." Thousands of tourists flock each year to the Massachusetts city made famous by the witch hysteria of 1692. The TV Land cable network wants to erect a nine-foot bronze statue in a city park honoring the late Elizabeth Montgomery, who played Samantha Stephens in the classic sitcom. http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/T/TV_BEWITCHED_STATUE?SITE=NWCN&TEMPLATE=STRANGEHEADS.html&SECTION=HOME

3. Carey probably had to say it would be "great coverage"
Don'tcha think? Since he didn't mention KO having anything to do with this "great coverage", I'll just bet it's not gonna be great.

Call me psychic.

Also, since we won't get our last night in 4ERD, maybe tomorrow's meeting should be one last shebang in 4ERD instead of in here. It's weird to start something on a Friday, isn't it?

5. Yeah, without a mention of who's giving the great coverage,
I've got my suspicions that Tweety's going to be cheerleading even the stupidest of blivet** remarks (that would be all of them), although perhaps we'll get to see Keef.

I don't see any harm in blogging in 4ERD an "extra" night, if that's what the group wants. As long as someone starts the thread about 5 minutes before the hour, people should have a chance to figure out where the meeting is. We'd originally thought about maybe starting on a Friday for the general party atmosphere that often comes with Fridays, but perhaps it would be best to leave our first home on that note? I may not make the meeting in any case, so y'all do whatever blows your skirts up. :woohoo:

6. I agree, Patsy; being part of the team, he had to say that.
. . . What happened to you last night? Thought you were coming back to groove w/ the late-niters.

Though switching on Friday is unusual, it's not unprecedented -- and since some mainly-nightly bloggers have already been informed of the Friday switch, it might be best to do what we originally said and keep it that way.

Either way, though, they'll find us.

18. I couldn't get to the TV
it was otherwise occupied -- and I was tired anyway. A night without Keith is not my idea of a night well-spent, but sometimes RL really gets in the way of a good drool session. :)

I haven't had a chance to send you and your family my sympathy for your loss. I was so sorry to read about your brother-in-law. I think it's enoough death and illness already, don't you?

I'll be here or there or wherever tomorrow. It just seemed kinda fitting to have one last Friday of table dancing in 4ERD. They could certainly use the levity and :loveya:s. :)

See you later, WG!

KO: :loveya:

20. I agree we should meet tomorrown night in 4ERD before the move.
One last night to let the paint fumes dry in the new clubhouse media room, and to thoroughly trash the old room!

2. Guess I'll take a long, hot bath this evening.
Watching the blivet strut like a banty rooster isn't my idea of a nice evening.

Besides, it's Dogwood Winter: cold and rainy.

4. We've endured too much Keithus interruptus lately.
. . . Also please note: * always started at 9 in the past. I think this was deliberate scheduling on the WH's part to interfere w/ KO's broadcast.

What the heck, tho -- it'll give Keith a day and a half to lay out the context and compose his response for tomorrow, and maybe throw in a blog for good measure. Something more permanent for the cybercommunity to mull.

7. I doubt it had anything to do with "Countdown"
more likely, it was to give the sheeple in the Central and Mountain time zones more time to get home and grab some chow before paying rapt attention to their fearless leader's golden utterances. :sarcasm:

I hadn't realized May sweeps are starting tonight. Way to go, blivet**. The networks are gonna love you.

. . . I was half-kidding about the schedule motive (these days you have to be half-serious because so often, stranger things turn out to be true).

10. Great idea, Whirly!! Maybe we should blog the movie instead!
Even better would be if someone was showing "Fear on Trial"...yeah!!

Or "Network," for that matter...

I just can't bring myself to watch the blivet. This is yet another reason to detest him. Oh well, I expected he would do this. x(

And TVNewser has officially reported that the coverage tonight will be all Tweety, all the time. He starts at 7, pauses for blivet-blather, then resumes until 10! AGGH! You know you will hear nothing but Dems and Repugs yelling at each other! Neeext! :boring: :-(

I am so going to miss hearing that growly "HelllOOOO!" for the fourth night in a row...

and as if all this weren't sad enough news: We are now into our seventh straight week without a News Quiz. No explanation, either, unless someone has received one I have yet to hear about. Obviously, Carey isn't sayin' nothin'. Yes, it's your entertaiment and thinking dollars NOT in action: Day 34 of the Countdown News Quiz Strike, aka "What HAVEN'T We Learned?"

The only appropriate smilie for a KO preemption:

I don't get TCM on this damn cable system. If it wasn't for MSNBC I'd throw it out the window!

I used to get it when I lived elsewhere and loved it. Ted Turner has all the good movies...curse him.
