75. Oh, they made me MAD!!
Wayne Slater, to my surprise, seemed to have joined the chorus of pundits and reporters who have proclaimed Bush's faith and sincere deovotion to the same. It's always some variation on "Well, even if you don't agree with him, no one can doubt his faith is genuine." :puke: Jim VandeHei (yes, THAT Jim VandeHei) even did three articles linking Bush to the legacy of Pope John Paul II.

So I let Countdown have it this time. I want nuns and historians and Quakers and God knows who else to weigh in on how much Bush is letting his light shine for Jesus.

My letter:

"This evening, November 29th, Countdown aired a segment on George W. Bush's belief that his mission is somehow God-ordained. You interviewed a Dallas Morning News reporter, Wayne Slater, who repeatedly emphasized Bush's faith, determination, and the like.

"This is only a tiny portion of the picture. For the past five years, I have been treated, almost nonstop, to a chorus of praise for George W. Bush's supposedly steadfast faith and the sincerity thereof. Where is the historical perspective?

"Jesus Himself told His disciples (John 16:2) that there would come a time when those who sought to kill them would believe such actions were the will of God. Anyone with even a casual knowledge of history knows that many wrongheaded and indeed cruel deeds were done in the name of God. I'm sure those who hanged pious grandmother Rebecca Nurse at Salem, racked and burned Anne Askew in Tudor England, and committed savagery during the Crusades believed they were living in the will of God, too. History sheds a different light on those actions.

"If you are going to devote segments on Bush's policy and the basis for it, it's time to get a more fleshed-out view. Where are the historians, members of the clergy, and political strategists who might discern the vindictiveness, pride, and cynicism within the Bush policy? I sincerely doubt Bush had John McCain smeared during the South Carolina primary because Jesus proclaimed it must be so."

111. nor, I think, did Lincoln imagine himself to be divinely annointed
Bush's behavior seems to indicate that he feels he can do no wrong and he certainly tolerates no dissent. Lincoln, on the other hand, had a Cabinet of able men, many of whom openly disagreed with and despised him, but he used them and he listened to them.

112. But, see, I don't agree...
I don't think asshat believes that at all. I think he believes in the idea of personal infallability, and perceives his "faith" as a means to get what he wants. He spends more time talking about God than he does thinking, praying, or listening to God.

I remember seeing a special on PBS about the personal faith of both Kerry and Chimpy. And I recall how the blivet responded to the evangelical fervor of the Moral majority. Somewhere in there, i heard the soundclip "hey, I can use that."

When one's religion becomes a means to achieve personal gain, it is dangerous territory. But when one uses religion and deliberately hurts, destroys, and takes from others, with no regard for the least and the lost, they are doomed. Big, double-dog doomed.

I wish I was his pastor. We'd begin with accountability.

113. hmm, I think you're right
the conviction that he's infallible is so incredibly dangerous because (in his mind, at least) it also means he's not accountable. One of the many differences I see between Bush's faith and Lincoln's (leaving aside that I personally think Lincoln's faith was sincere and Bush's is expedient) is that Lincoln expected to be held accountable at Judgement Day for his actions and I'm not sure that Bush does. Then again, I'm not sure that Bush has ever been brought to book for anything.

when someone asked him if God was on our side, he said something like "Is God on our side? Of that, I do not know, but I most sincerely hope and pray that we are on HIS side."

that both sides of the Civil War claimed that God was on their side but that at least one side had to be wrong. Implication: both might be. Think you'd ever hear W imply that neither side of a war might be the "right" side?

Special sneakers speed crossers' run for the border
By Elliot Spagat
Published: 11.17.2005

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

SAN DIEGO - The high-top sneakers cost $215 at a San Diego boutique, but the designer is giving them away to migrants before they cross to this side of the U.S.-Mexican border. These are no ordinary shoes.

A compass and flashlight dangle from one shoelace. The pocket in the tongue is for money or pain relievers. A rough map of the border region is printed on a removable insole.

They are red, white and green, the colors of the Mexican flag. On the back ankle, a drawing of Mexico's patron saint of migrants.
On this side of the border, the shoes sit in art collections or the closets of well-heeled sneaker cognoscenti.

On the other side, in Tijuana, it's a utilitarian affair: Immigrants-to-be are happy to have the sturdy, lightweight shoes for the hike - or dash - into the United States.

this weekend when I went shopping for some cooking supplies and arrived at the turkey basters/flavor injectors. I think I turned into a 14 year old at that moment. The jokes would not stop.

83. Hello ladies, anyone still here.
Happy week after Thanksgiving.
I've been lurking and not posting much the last couple of days.

I loved watching the Countdown apology anthology again tonight.
Ol'Randy Dukester Cunningham is only crying because he got caught. Even in the midst of home renovation (I wake up having had nightmares about appliances), I was never even tempted to buy a 7000 dollar Louis Phillipe commode. And I thought I had champagne taste.

I still don't like Dana Milbank (too smug), although he did get off a good one at Unca Karl tonight. "I'd like to do as much for him as he's done for me over the past 5 years."

How's by all of you?

87. Hey Bunny!
I was late arriving myself. Having a bad day, but hopefully it wil get better.

I think you're right about Cunningham. He and his kind never cry or act sorry until they are caught. They never think of the "what if's" when they are breaking the law, but "Oh my God, he's so sorry" after he gets snagged.

His kind makes me ill!!!
