E-Beg re: ESPN Radio Tomorrow!
(advanced groveling taking place...no smiley for it).

Since I'll be at work tomorrow (and we don't get ESPN Radio here in the not-so-great Northwest anyway), if anyone catches the Dan and Keith Show tomorrow, could you do a quick recap? It would be super appreciated!

Thanks so much!!!! :)

1. If you're at a computer during the day and can stream,
go to ESPNradio.com. I think you can stream it live. I also heard you'll be able to stream it from the site after the show.

2. I am so pathetic...
I don't have speakers on my computer at work, and my one here at home is so antiquated, it's not even funny.

Do you think they'll have transcripts anywhere?

Thanks a bunch for replying! :)

3. How can a computer not have speakers?
They all make noise of some kind.

It's possible that your sound is muted, at least on your work computer. Check your control panel. It can be un-muted. Then, if you have headphones or ear buds or something, you can listen and no one else can hear.

As for me, I don't want to be interrupted while listening to Keith to do work. My plan is to store the thing on my radio until I get home and can listen to it. Problem is, I can't figure out how to make it work--all my tests thus far have failed at this despite my following instructions to the letter. I guess I have no choice but to try to find help online.

4. I figured out how to make it work
so yes, I can provide a recap. Not sure how soon, though. Others probably can sooner. I have a guest in for the weekend so cannot spend much time online.

5. anyone have it on?
Anyone listening? I’ve fought with my PC here at work, and it’s just not letting me get the audio feed. Crap. I actually have to concentrate on what I’m doing.

figured if I had to be stuck on the West Loop, why not do it when there's something nice to listen to? Anyway, I was trying not to become a traffic statistic, so I don't have a transcript, just general impressions. As you might expect, the subject du jour was baseball and steroids. Good, thoughtful stuff -- talking about Canseco (KO pointing that just because Canseco is a narcissist and all-around jerk that doesn't mean he was lying about the steroids) and several other players (are they or aren't they using steroids? DP and KO hope the answer is no but suspect it's yes).

A lot of banter between DP and KO, as you'd expect, and they seem happy to be reunited, although KO must have been pretty nervous/excited, as his speaking voice was much higher-pitched than usual at the beginning of the show. As the hour progressed, the pitch gradually dropped into his usually growly range and he was full of snark from the get-go. In parting, he made some remark to Dan about talking to him about Lou Gehrig next Thursday (at the end of the hour they were discussing whether anyone would ever get a 100% vote for the hall of fame and that sidetracked into a discussion of great baseball players in general; KO and DP disagree on Lou Gehrig apparently, with KO (I'm guessing) holding the position that Gehrig's career was cut short by his death and perhaps that should be taken into account). If they're going to talk about that next Thursday does that mean KO's doing Dan's show on Thursday instead of Friday? And if so, where are his woolly-bear caterpillars going to be on Friday afternoon? And evening?

10. By popular demand, I will do a transcript.
For sure, now that it looks as if a lot of people just couldn't listen rather than didn't care.

About the Lou Gehrig thing: I think what was at issue is that Dan and Keith feel differently about Cal Ripken having broken Gehrig's consecutive game-appearance streak. Keith thinks that Ripken should deliberately NOT have tried to break it, but to have left it unbroken out of respect for Gehrig. He believes this for the simple reason that Gehrig didn't have any *choice* as to when to end his streak--the decision was made for him by the progress of his disease. Keith is terribly impressed (and I can't blame him) by the fact that for so many games before his streak stopped, Gehrig was playing as well as he was while he was, literally, dying. He had to quit playing when he became so ill he couldn't go on. Ripken was not facing any such handicap, and Keith believes that out of respect for the situation under which Gehrig's record ended, Ripken should have deliberately ended his streak short of Gehrig's and allowed it to stand. Dan disagrees with him, believing that Ripken should have kept it up as long as he wanted to regardless--you know, records are made to be broken, etc. I think Keith would have no problem agreeing with him on this if his quibble with it was strictly for sentiment's sake, but it's not--it's because we'll never really know how long Gehrig's streak might have been had he not become sick. Keith's sentimental in that sense, at least. He doesn't believe someone should break a sick man's record just to prove it can be done.

Their book goes into this issue. They disagree about Pete Rose too, which they also go into in their book--Dan thinks he belongs in the HOF, his sins are in the past, he should be forgiven because he was too great a player and they have artifacts of his career in Cooperstown anyway. Keith disagrees. He doesn't think any player who bet on baseball and was banned from the sport and has never even apologized should be in, ever--you should have to be a great PERSON, not just a great player. And he says they have a copy of his book written at age 14 in the HOF too, but that doesn't mean HE should be in!

11. ah, thanks for the clarification. I definitely agree with KO about
Pete Rose. I'll have to think about Ripken. If I'd been Ripken, I would have let the record stand, but then I'm not as competitive as some people -- I don't like to play cards, for instance, because so many avid card players are deadly serious about winning and I just like to have fun. I guess I think Ripken's record should have an asterisk although what do I know about baseball? As for the "talking to DP on Thursday" bit, I suspect that may not mean anything ominous about KO's appearances on Friday -- it would make sense for them touch base the day before their joint broadcast to talk about what they're going to cover the next day. KO's been absent so much lately I immediately jumped to a conclusion; my bad.

13. Just wanted to say, gk, I think you're right about Thursday.
I think Dan made it really clear that Keith will be on Fridays from 2 to 3 and that's it. He's not going to be on on Thursday. Not on the air, anyway. At least not now. I'm sure he just meant he and Keith are going to go over topics for the show.

12. Well I missed the espn thing
and was going to listen but if Keith is going to knock Cal Jr. I best just skip it. Cal Jr. is an all around nice guy that has done a lot for Baltimore during his career and after. He also never forgot Aberdeen and you ought to see what he has built for the kids there. Records are made to be broken and Cal played hurt, sick etc. BEFORE he ever thought about breaking any records. One of the things that was so nice about him was he loved to play baseball and was not concerned with breaking records. He had a hard time dealing with the hype, he just wanted to play. He also put about all the money, gifts etc. into ALS research and still gets huge amounts of donations there. For some reason I think Lou is up there smiling thinking well least it was a good guy that gives back broke my record. Of course I am biased, I got to sit in Cal's lap and I can tell you not only is he nice looking with the prettiest blue eyes you have ever seen, he smelled good too. He had the best cologne on I ever smelled on a man.

14. CC, you would not be the first person to disagree with Keith on anything.
But it's something he feels deeply about. I don't think he is "knocking" Cal at all, just expressing an opinion. He never said anything bad about the man personally. Also, you have to admit, as hurt or sick as Cal played, he was not struggling under the burden of a terminal illness that was destined to defeat him, only temporary ailments.

As for sitting in Cal's lap and smelling his cologne, I doubt Keith has ever done that--and yes, for all we know, the fact that he hasn't may well have influenced his opinions. :-)

I doubt KO's dissing Ripken personally for going after the record. On one hand, I can see KO's point of view, and frankly, I would expect that players of Gehrig's era or those who were youngun's coming up when Gehrig was still playing might not want to touch that record, out of respect.

On the other hand... what is a decent period of mourning? Forever? What if baseball is collectively stricken by the Bonanza Syndrome? Those of you who are old enough to remember Bonanza (or who have been subjected to it in syndication) probably know that if any female love interest set foot on the Ponderosa, that chick was toast. What if lots of exceptional baseball players fell victim to tragic illness, inexplicable violence, rogue asteroids, or bizarre electrolysis accidents? Things could get to the point where the sport would mummify because no one would want to risk breaking a record out of respect for the departed.

In a sense, it's not fair to Gehrig... just as his illness was unfair... and just as it's unfair that many exceptional players from other eras have had their records more or less expunged because the baseball gods have decided that the era they played in "doesn't count" for one reason or another. If it were someone else making the "respect Gehrig" argument, I'd say they're making this argument for Gehrig because he has a living presence for them that the other figures do not, but I'm not sure this is the case for KO. I suspect a large part of the allure of his baseball card collection is that each card has its own story or stories behind it, and that some of these players we've never heard of are more familiar to him than Gehrig is to us.

16. I still like
KO and he did get baseball brownie points on not going after Palmeiro in his blog like others have done on air, print etc. I didn't get a chance to listen to the espn and not sure if it is still there so don't tell me if he did.

One of these days I need to install my scanner again (soon as I guess my courage up since last time I did it the hard drive went bad) and scan in the picture. It was all someone else's fault I ended up on Cal's lap. LOL

9. Online stream
Hi guys,
I don't know if this has already been posted here, but here it is, just in case:
http://espnradio.espn.go.com/espnradio/radio?id=2035077&type=show
You want to skip ahead to 58:30 to get to the beginning of the KO part.
There's also a little bit with KO clapping (for himself) a few minutes earlier than that, before the commercial break.
Enjoy!
