Interracial couple in Louisiana denied marriage license

updated 7:42 a.m. EDT, Fri October 16, 2009

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (CNN) -- Civil rights advocates in eastern Louisiana are calling for a justice of the peace of Tangipahoa Parish to resign after he refused to issue a marriage license to an interracial couple.

Terence McKay claims a justice of the peace refused to give him and his white girlfriend a marriage license.

"He's an elected public official and one of his duties is to marry people. He doesn't have the right to say he doesn't believe in it," Patricia Morris, president of the NAACP branch of Tangipahoa Parish, located near the Mississippi line, said Thursday.

"If he doesn't do what his position calls for him to do, he should resign from that position."

Note:
wow--the whole, "concern for the children meme" was interesting. :eyes: like it's his job, to make decisions for others, based on his concern for their children.

Topic to be cross-posted in feminism forum.

1. He can't be racist, he lets black people use his bathroom

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/10/15/interracial-co...

"I'm not a racist. I just don't believe in mixing the races that way," Bardwell told the Associated Press on Thursday. "I have piles and piles of black friends. They come to my home, I marry them, they use my bathroom. I treat them just like everyone else."

I doubt a man who wouldn't want me to be born somehow is concerned about my well being.

And how does one measure "piles and piles" of black friends? Why does this particular choice of terms seem reminiscent of the way black people were measured, coming off the slave ships? :eyes:

This guy gets my jack ass of the month award. Someone needs to check his home for the wooden cross paraphernalia, white robes and hoods. Dude reeks of klan.

...i wonder if this this was his way of lashing out at the President, and the teeny bit of progress shown by his obtaining the position in this country. In his ass backward mind, he's making certain no one like that will ever be conceived on his watch.

5. He's not REALLY a racist
as long as everyone stays in their boxes, on their side of the tracks, in their schools, with their people, etc. As long as no one CROSSES those boundaries, the world is in order.

6. Bardwell resigns.
Bardwell, speaking to CNN affiliate WBRZ, said he was advised "that I needed to step down because they was going to take me to court, and I was going to lose."

But get this: "I would probably do the same thing again," he said. "I found out I can't be a justice of the peace and have a conscience."

No you can't be a blatantly racist judge. He must have thought the good old days were back.

I meant to when I saw this on msn's front page (weeks and weeks ago) and just never got around to it. Thank you! :hi:
I was pleased to see he FINALLY resigned. Not sure why he held out as long as he did. Stubborn old mule.
