Asian Slurs End Shock Jocks' Show on CBS
May 12, 2:39 PM EST

One month after CBS Radio fired radio host Don Imus, it has permanently pulled the plug on a pair of suspended New York shock jocks for a prank phone call rife with offensive Asian stereotypes.

"The Dog House with JV and Elvis," hosted by Jeff Vandergrift and Dan Lay, "will no longer be broadcast," CBS Radio spokeswoman Karen Mateo said Saturday.

-----------------snip-------------------

Vandergrift and Lay broadcast a call to a Chinese restaurant in which the caller, in an exaggerated accent, placed an order for "shrimp flied lice," claimed he was a student of kung fu, and compared menu items to employees' body parts.

The initial airing of the call went unnoticed, but a rebroadcast after Imus's firing prompted an outcry from Asian-American groups. Vandergrift and Lay were initially suspended without pay, but Asian-Americans quickly demanded the same penalty applied to the much higher-profile Imus.

"This is a victory not only for the Asian-American community, but for all communities who find themselves constant targets of racist and sexist programming," said Jeanette Wang, an executive with the Organization of Chinese Americans.

1. i'm glad AAs are speaking up
I wrote a letter to TIME Mag. years ago about the 'inscrutable' label that was always attached to anything Asian.

:hi:

2. The organizations representing Asian Americans
are visible and vocal.

They were having none of Rosie O'Donnell's comments on the View, a while back. I was pleased to see them demand an apology and speak out at how inappropriate and rude her comments were.

3. Thats great
Now if only we could get the same reactions to the Hispanic people being treated like crap, that would be a good day.

4. Amen!
I was beyond bowled over, when tapes of a hispanic man being beaten by the police in southern california was shrugged off by so many.

Sadly, we still have a ways to go in regard to hispanics. :( Thank you for mentioning this, judaspriestess. It's something we all should be cognizant of.

It would be nice to not hear hispanics slurred so frequently, or to see people immediately assume that one with brown skin and a latin surname isn't a legal citizen of this country. :eyes: Unfortunately I believe that the issue became worse with this administration--with it's focus on immigration. They paid most of their attention to one segment of the immigrant population (we know what segment that was). Doing so just added to the smokescreen of bigotry this admin. uses to take people's eyes from the evil they commit daily.
