Don't buy LG appliances.

At least that's my opinion.

I've had nothing but trouble with our LG washer and dryer. My neighbor has had all kinds of problems with her LG fridge and dish washer.

It's not so much the problems, but LG's refusal to admit there is a problem or do anything to correct the problems.

Our current problem is with a cracked drum in our 4 year old dryer. The dryer started making a loud clunking noise so I pulled it apart hoping it was the very common LG dryer problem of a warped roller wheel. No such luck. Instead of having the very common $7 dollar roller fix, my situation is the OTHER common problem with these lemons - a cracked dryer drum. $100 dollars for the part alone.

The web is filled with complaints about these drums. The weld is defective so the drum splits at the seam. Everyone who calls LG gets the same response. "We aren't aware of any problems with that design. Sorry. You are on your own."

Fortunately for me, I'm pretty handy and have become more adventurous so I can make the repair (I think). Service call repairs are running $350-600 bucks. I have the dryer pulled apart and the new drum just arrived UPS.

1. I'm in the market for new appliances

and I'd been looking at the LG stuff because their styling and features are better than much of the competition. However, being a suspicious sort of bitch, I also searched "LG complaints" and got a total eyeful. Most of the complaints are about shitty and overpriced service. Most of the complaints about the fridges are about the icemakers (something I'd pull out since I'm not a drinker). The washers seem to give nothing but trouble unless you're very lucky and get one that works. The dryers love to pop welds.

So my stove will be a GE and the fridge will be Frigidaire or Kenmore and the new washer and dryer will also likely be Kenmore. No, they're not stylish but they work.

Only my second new dryer. Never had a problem with any of my old used ones.
Kenmore washers and dryers are made by Whirlpool. Whirlpool would be better than Kenmore because they own the factory. Kenmore just does the electronics in the partnership, so they tell me.

2. funny you should mention this

my son's bottom freezer LG fridge with ice/water, sprung a leak a few months ago, seemingly out of nowhere. it flooded their upstairs apartment, which is a terrible thing, especially with new hardwood floors. the landlord is now suing LG due to defective merchandise. landlord has the $$, so maybe he'll win!

i've had very good luck with appliances bought from costco, fridge and washer, both whirlpool. the only lemon was an oster toaster.

can you take them to small claims court?

4. For me, it wouldn't be worth it to take them to small claims court.....

But I would gladly join in the class action if some "sue happy trial lawyer" wants to file.

In doing my research, I added my name to a class action for the washer door "mold" issue. I sent an email to the atty to suggest they file for the drum weld (probably a waste of my time).

Thing like this are what make me thankful for our class action system. For every bullshit case the media highlights, there are ten where a manufacturer like LG is getting away with murder and counts on individuals not bothering or having the resources to bring an action.

It's getting to the point when I see an LG appliance in somebody's house, the first word that comes to mind is "sucker."

I know that's harsh, but really, a little bit of research can save a hell of a lot of heartache.

8. Wow. I never knew.

I'm glad I only have their washer and dryer.

My neighbor has a whole kitchen full of LG appliances she hates.

Of course, me and the other neighbor have the same GE profile stainless dishwashers we bought to replace our old developer installed GE cheapo dishwashers. We both agree the old cheapo circa 1995 units cleaned MUCH better. The neighbor with the LG gave her old GE to her parents who installed it in their garage kitchen and the thing still works great.

Well, at least I was able to repair my dryer myself and save a bunch on service calls. The part was $86 bucks from Sear Parts Direct plus $15 bucks for shipping. I also bought a couple rollers to have just-in-case.

You really have to shop around. Some on-line retailers wanted $75-100 bucks (gulp!) for shipping as this was a large drum part. I thought Sears was going to be a "too good to be true" situation but the LG original part arrived - I could tell all the parts sellers was fishing off the same dock as the "ships from" info was all similar. I think the other retailers were pricing on size versus actual weight.

9. I will no longer buy any GE appliances.

Within 3 years of redoing our kitchen the microwave broke 3 times and the frig 2 times. Right now the ice maker is not working so make that 3. The warranty did cover the part on the microwave once but not the labor. But now I know to avoid LG too. Thanks for the warning.

10. buy bosch

a little spendy, but solid as a rock. my dishwasher is 15 yo. replaced the seal, and the soap dispenser. simple jobs.
got a washer and dryer, stacking pair. efficient, good variety of cycles.

11. If I put in a dishwasher (mostly for resale value, I think they're silly for a singleton)

it will definitely be a Bosch. The reviews are great and they offer a variety of sizes and shapes.
