Large Octagon Tiles
I am tiling a new master bath and I would like to create a floor pattern like thsi:

I would like the octagons to be 12"x12" and I would insert four 2"x2" glass tiles in the voids.

Is there any place to buy octagonal tiles this size rather than cutting the corners off of square tiles? I have come up empty on Google.

1. If I were you, I would post that question here:
http://www.johnbridge.com/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=1

You'll never meet a friendlier bunch of pros on the net willing to help out a DIYer/Novice (not to take away from the nice folks at DU).

It's a great resource for your question AND proper installation techniques.

I never knew how much I didn't know about tiling until I spent some time over there.

You can post a thread on you project and get questions answered from start to finish by kicking the thread.

3. Have you visited a any tile supply stores ?
You say you want the tiles to be 12 by 12. I assume that means you have not looked over your options in places that specialize in tile. That would be your next move in the process. Take your idea to the places where they sell tile. That is known as the consulting phase.Installation is for the most part ,pretty straight forward when you are moving forward on your idea.

I did a tile job not too long ago for a lady in a wheel chair. She had some ideas about what she wanted ,but knew little or nothing about tiling. I sent her to the store with her concept. I had her come back with the information. After visiting five tile outlets she found the materials for her concept in two of the five stores. She showed me her concept in the form of a pattern and asked if it is possible to do this. Her idea was nothing short of brilliant. She did not think she could do it-, design her bathroom herself.

We did it!
I use photos of her concept before and after to show those people that think they have no eye for design. In her words, if she can-,you can,but-you must apply yourself.

Take your drawing to a tile outlet for a consult.

4. I have been doing a lot of googleing and talking with a tile guy I know...
Otherwise my wife is supposed to be doing the leg work as I am doing all of the finish labor for the construction of this house after my regular job and on weekends. I gave her the sketch so maybe she will come up with something.

Your pattern should be a go.The client liked diamonds on hers and used 1"by 1" glass tiles in various colors in rows for added decor.Three wide. The glass tiles were close to the colors of the floor tile which added cool contrast to the design. Her being a antique dealer she was insistent upon keeping the existing floor tiles which were 1" by 1 " flooring tile in a nineteen twenty house. We did the walls and the tub surround to blend. Some of her ideas came out of magazines she read. Although she never imagined designing her own room. Her daughter ,her son, the inlaws the outlaws ,all had their ideas about it.

She thought about backing down and letting her daughter in law have her say and way. After all she is very smart and had done both her bathrooms or had those bathrooms tiled to suit her, thereby a expert as it may have seemed to my client.

So I told her, those bathrooms are all about her design, all about what appeals to her-,yer son went along with all that of course. Is her concept in it also yours?
We can do anything, can she say that? Shouldn't you have what you like?

They did not think she could design her own. She did,it worked and as they say from looking at the pictures, it's beautiful.
It is indeed very interesting to watch a creative design take off .,or be a part of the action. Yep, she got herself and her electric wheel chair in her van and off she went,by herself shopping for just the right material for her concept which developed as she was shopping.Leave some room for ideas in yer pattern !Her entire house is her ideas now, after about a year .She picked out all the colors, she choose all the materials ,her ideas transformed the house,me -,I'm more like a musician, or just the instrument !

Good luck with your project.
