What's the best way to hang a rug or weaving on the wall
without damaging the rug? I don't want to put it in a frame. Thanks

1. I just saw a tip in a quilting book
basically you create hangers for it (fabric loops) that you then secure to the rug which would allow you to hang it. This requires of course sewing the fabric to the back of the rug but I don't think that would really damage it...unless it is an antique.
I would sew it by hand if I did this..

Or you could use clips. Problem is that clips leave dents in the rug...

I am sure some other DUers have some good ideas...

2. great idea
thanks, all I could think of was some kind of tacks putting holes in the piece. Now I can't wait to do it!

3. Try these links!
Here's a place you can buy tapestry hangers:

http://www.artinapinch.net/

And here are several ways you can do it yourself:

4. Another idea
You can sew or baste by hand a strip of fabric or wide cloth binding across the top of your rug (on the back). Secure the top and bottom edges of the strip, forming a tube open on both ends. Now you can slide in a wooden dowel or even a curtain rod. Two nails, or rod brackets in the wall on either end hold everything up. You can make the dowel short enough to hide the ends behind the rug. Hope this makes sense.

When making a quilt I want to hang, I sew the top edge of the "tube" into the binding.

5. I usually lash it to a length of dowel
at top and bottom, then hang the dowel on 2 nails.

I'm a rug weaver and my walls are covered with rugs and hangings.

6. I have also used for both hanging rugs and quilts..
a length of bamboo or natural length of a tree branch as a dowel for this and depending on your deco style, this looks great.
