Here is my slideshow of Hurricane Wilma
Edited on Wed Nov-09-05 04:31 AM by RagingInMiami
I have been experimenting with various slideshow softwares. I still haven't found one I am completely satisfied with. Let me know if you are able to view this one.

EDIT: Needed to do some adjustments. Will repost link soon.

2. Amazing photographs and an amazing story

Promise me you won't move to Tornado Alley. You do realize that all that stuff flying around can hit you? ;-)

Do you have Photoshop Elements? It came with the plastic "toy" I bought. You can create PDF slideshows which will be easier to view by a broader internets :eyes: audience.

Example: You can click on the link to view. You may have to use your spacebar to advance the snapshots. Or, you can right click (use save target) and save it offline for viewing.

You can also use the photo group smugalugafug site. (I'm such a whore :) ). Setup a gallery and use a forced slideshow view. Example is below. You could setup your site to open the link in a new window so visitors won't leave your site. Click on the link to see how it'd work.

3. I do have PS Elements and I have acquired PS CS 2 as well
I like the PDF method you used because it did not take a whole lot of time downloading. Of course, you only had three photos, so I wonder how it would be if you had more than fifty. Nice photos, by the way.

I used PowerPoint when I did the slideshow on the antiwar protest in DC because I wanted to include a narrative with the photos. But that, I learned, wasn't the perfect solution because it took a while to download and not everybody was able to view it for whatever reason.

So this time, I used Irfanview, which is free software and not a bad thing to download because it has other functions as well. A lot of photographers at www.photo.net recommend it, and many of them are longtime pros who do nothing else but photography. You can download it for free here.

http://www.irfanview.com/

And I've also been trying out various other slideshow programs, but most of them suck because they force you to keep your photo in a presized frame, usually for horizontel photos. And if they give you the option to write captions, you have to write the caption on the photo which defeats the whole purpose of showing your photos.

So what I finally did was create my captions in PS using the canvas function. This is the first time I tried that method but I like it because I am able to control the size of the caption box.

But I notice the Irfanview method, which basically creates an "exe" file, also takes a while to download. And it might not be accessible to some people who view it at work, like was the case with the antiwar protest.

I guess the ideal method would be to use Macromedia Flash like the newspapers and news websites use. I have also acquired Macromedia Flash, but it is very complicated to learn and lately, all I've been doing is learning new computer software (self-teaching), and I've come to the conclusion that computer programmers are the worst writers in the world. It is impossible for them to explain the simplest method of doing things. And they always leave out steps, which force me to spend several hours figuring out how to cross that barrier on my own.

Anyway, now that I discovered I can make captions with the canvas PS method, I'm going to give the PDF method a try.

4. Awesome photos
I was unable to view in FireFox which only offered the option to "Save to Disk".
I opened the link in Internet Explorer and chose "Run".
I was able to "right click" to view tne pictures.
Powerful Photos.

5. I'd love to look
but it's telling me it'll take and hour and 15 minutes to download lol. I'm having major connection problems this-I'll be very surprised if I don't get kicked off in 30 minutes. Don't suppose you have a thumbnail page somewhere?

6. Are you on dial-up?
I've been trying to figure out a way where it doesn't take so long to download. I'm still researching so I'll let you know if I come up with a solution.

Thanks for telling me because it helps me pinpoint the pros and cons of each slideshow software.

9. You know how I told you in DC how I abide by the philosophy of
getting in people's face to get the perfect shot. I was just getting in Wilma's face.

10. Great slide show
Looked at it at work finally. The Macs (G5 running whatever the newest mac thing is) wouldn't play it. But found a PC so shared it with people there today. You got rave reviews though the boss thought I should not of shown kids (18 on up kids) how you kept your sanity without electric.
Took less than a minute to download both at work and at home. Glad you didn't get hit with anything when getting in Wilma's face. Going to share the slide show with many others too.

14. Thank you
I'm putting together a newer slideshow where I left out the photo with the bottles in it. It will also have a couple of new photos in it with revised text.

I plan on using the new one to market myself as a photojournalist so I don't want to come across as a complete drunkard.

11. Thanks. Good photography and documentary work.
Many nice (art-wise) images.

I hadn't paid any attention to the slideshow option in Irfanview (which I also highly recommend), and it is very nice. I would have chosen a black background and the "fit to screen, all ..." option, since a lot of white space around them doesn't add much. The main downside is saving in .exe form, which limits access. A more widely accessible option might be a web-based presentation format like a SmugMug provides, or maybe the .pdf format which is available on all systems I know about (but not all users "get" it.

My preferred image editor, Picture Windows Pro, also creates a .html page which produces a slideshow presentation that should be accessible by anyone with net access, but it is pretty basic. Flash (see the work by Eric Blumrich and on TakeBackTheMedia) seems to be a very flexible format, but it has a bit of a learning curve for both creators and novice users who don't get it pre-installed.

No really good options I know about, which is sort of surprising, but I thing a web page solution comes closest to being universal.

13. Thanks Cons
I might have to give Pictures Windows Pro a try. Right now, I'm putting together a revised and improved version of the Hurricane Wilma slideshow in PDF format.

I'm wary about using the "fit to screen" function because I imagine it would reduce the quality of the low-res photos.

Right now I'm in the process of learning PS CS 2 and I'm coming to the conclusion that for all the hype, it has its limitations. For example, when I had PS Elements 3, I would be able to plug in my Sandisk card reader and download my photos automatically.

Now I have to do it manually and it's always a pain because if I shoot RAW, the photos end up in several different files with thumbnails on the memory card.

15. Great shots
And very courageous photographer, lol ;-)

Crinimy! Imagine to be in the middle of that storm :-o
Especially the shot of your neighbours house where half of the tree has given in to the forces while the rest still stands. It tells a lot of the power of nature.
