Share your vacation pictures
I thought it would be fun to have a thread of vacation photos--hopefully this isn't a duplicate. If you're inclined, post a shot from a vacation you've taken. Day trips don't count--I can't use Yosemite, since I have done a one-day trip there.

My submission goes back some years--we've mostly stayed local and regional for vacations in recent years. This is a picture of "Park Avenue" in Arches National Park, taken in June, 2002 with my Olympus C700.

1. One of my first attempts at digital
Finally got a digital camera before the birth of my grandson, and before a trip to the Olympic northwest. Here is Shi Shi beach in Washington State. It is a two hour long muddy hike to get to it. I was happy I had decided to get a pocket camera, a Kodak. I still use it some. BTW, I really want to go to Arches National Park!

7. It looks like the 2-hour slog was well worth it
I've not yet made it to the Olympic Pn, but I'd love to go, and your shot only confirms that.

Regarding the camera, I look back on my Olympus and from this vantage, it seems ancient. But at the time, I was really impressed (as a novice photographer) in the capabilities of the C700, and I got a lot of really decent shots with it.

2. Park Avenue looks like a beautiful place
If I went to somewhere exotic like that my head would blow up.

I'm a terrible tourist and do horrible travelogue photos. I usually go off the beaten path in search of new discoveries.

However; I always try to do various Postcards that I can use to remember a particular trip:

And this would be the kind of vacation/travel photo I would take:

"On The Road"

8. Thanks, postatomic
I love the Airstream through the rainy window picture. I get some fairly non-vacationlike Capote-in-Kansas tones from the picture, but I really like it. Thanks for posting.

9. Hi, MissHoneychurch
Those are great pictures, and I'd wager you have a lot more from a trip like that. It's difficult to read the look on the man's face in the second photo. I'm wondering, were most people fairly open with you? Were you escorted to various locales? It sounds like a wonderful trip, if not logistically easy.

13. It was one of the most amazing vacations I ever had
and I would visit the country in a second again. We had a driver and a guide, so we were never alone. But they both were very sweet and welcoming to us. We booked the trip through an agency, so there were no logistically problems. Hotels were booked in advance, the driver knew his way around and we never got lost. In advance of the trip we said which cities and sites we wanted to see, so that everything could be planned without problems by the agency. The agency specialized in Iranian tours, the owner is Persian.

Me and my mom's partner took over 3000 pictures in 2 weeks.

4. This is developing into a beautiful and informative thread.
Take a look at this- and ask me no questions because I have no answers.

We came upon this on a drive through Arizona, from the Grand Canyon going to Page Arizona - we would have had a wreck veering off if there had been any traffic - I was not driving and remember how I yelled: "HOOOOOOLD IT".

After I wrote this I decided to google the Glenn Canyon dam, and, damn, if I did not scroll down and find a photo of the structure and a little information about it:

I hope you agree that my photo of it is more dramatic.

10. Hey, Mira
First things first, yes, I completely agree that your photo is more dramatic and much better framed than the one at the link. I love the "HOOOOOOOLD IT!" part--it almost sounds Fred Flinstone-esque, although you probably didn't put your feet through the floor of the car in order to stop it. I need to take a Utah/Arizona trip one of these days--there's too much I'm missing.

I'm enjoying this thread--it is informative. It slowly drifted down for a couple of hours sans-replies, so I was surprised to see several responses when I returned this evening.

Upthread, I mentioned needing to visit the Olympic Peninsula. I need to append that statement to include the San Juan Islands, and Vancouver Island too. I've never made it up that way, and it all looks beautiful. Thanks for posting.

15. Thanks, Matt. More of my ignorance exposed--I had never even heard of Nahanni
I looked at your flickr photos--what an amazing place. To my discredit, I've never even heard of Nahanni National Park Preserve. However, I have heard of The Cirque of the Unclimbables--it looks to be a couple hundred miles west of Nahanni, and the scenery looks similar, based on pictures I've seen. Congratulations on getting to visit such a wild and beautiful place. Your Turkey shots are great too. I'm starting to get that travel itch all over again.

21. Victor and Cripple Creek
I love those two little towns, connected on a short high road interrupted with gold mining fields. In Cripple Creek I play blackjack and in Victor I stare at the wonderful old houses. In an owner run grocery store there I saw gold painted ancient radiators wrapped around poles that held up the building.
The town's buildings are lettered with old time-y advertisements.
I have been there twice, and hope to go there again.
There is a bar I like in the shadows on the right......

Thanks for bringing me memories.

Cripple Creek voted in gambling and then they converted the buildings on Main street to casinos and the town revived. Victor voted against it, and property values plunged and their town fell into disrepair.
Your photo shows that they are pulling out of that. It thrills me to see that.
I was there before I had a digital camera.

22. We're not gamblers
so we were kind of dismayed by all the casinos in Cripple Creek. I remembered it from my teenage years, but I guess the gambling came in during the '90s sometime. The old lady in the visitor center there commented on how it had boosted their revenue base, and I can understand that, but Victor had much more of the "feel" that I was after in those gold rush towns.

25. We're on the same page (except for that I will not pass up a proper Blackjack
game when possible)
I saw Victor almost falling off the map though because of its decision to now allow gambling as a salvation; it was in horrible disrepair and wasting away.
Now your photo shows a massive upswing. I'm pleased, because Victor is important to me for a number of reasons beyond just a location in my memory

I'm glad you got to be there, and recently, too!!!

32. Victor is a Ghost Town

I don't believe that Victor even considered gambling. I went there to photograph the Mt. Pisgah Cemetery near Cripple Creek only to find that some assholes put up a War Memorial at the entrance that included a Huey and an APC. They destroyed one of the historical landmarks of the area.

Cripple Creek isn't doing much better. And they are neglecting many historical elements of what was once a wonderful little town. I don't gamble, so with my original destination destroyed, I sought out other places. I meant the man who bought most of the historical documents/items from Victor. Learned who made the decision to destroy some historical buildings.

It's sad. No one cares much about the history of that area and no one is doing much to preserve it.

38. Very sad! When were you there? My last visit was about 9 years ago or maybe
even more, I was accompanying a friend who was looking to buy property in Victor, and restore it. So I got to crawl all over buildings and history.

I have an emotional connection to Victor. Cripple Creek just weirded me out with the red velvet Wild West whore house decoration in the casinos.
Plus, just like in Atlantic City, what I saw was a bustling main street and despair everywhere else. In Victor I only saw despair.
